Sorry you've encountered problems with the pdf. I've just tested it again and it downloaded ok, but do let me know if you continue to have problems.

Hard copies should be winging their way out to all veterinary practice premises this week.

As you might expect, in my role in the RCVS coms team, I regularly field calls from the BBC on various veterinary matters. On one occasion however, I took a call from one BBC correspondent who had definitely got the wrong Ian Holloway. Being a Blade myself, I was sorely tempted to start a rumour that 'I' was moving to Bramall Lane, but just about managed to resist.

I have no knowledge of how much JGW was involved with the production of the poster, and the criticism may be valid, but I don't think that hiding behind the anonymous log-in is the appropriate way to have the discussion.

I'm afraid I disagree with the premise that JGW is the person who most deserves credit.

He shared something he saw on holiday. Sure. And without that, the poster may not have happened (unless someone else saw it on holiday, I guess). Both the RCVS and I have acknowledged that, both publicly and in private correspondence with him

But there was a lot more to it than that. JGW didn't write the UK version, nor help in any way with the process of pushing it through Standards, nor the design, nor the production.

The people who deserve most credit are Lizzie Lockett and Ian Holloway.

JGW did indeed stick his oar in behind the scenes, but I am afraid to say it was a hindrance. In my opinion, he very nearly caused the project to stall completely.

So yes, absolutely, thank you JGW for sharing. I mean that sincerely. But that is very much as far as it goes.

Thanks folks. I am going to take a small bow for this one, because I did put a lot of work in behind the scenes and I'm very chuffed by the positive early reaction, here and elsewhere.

I must come back, though, to the importance of dropping the RCVS a quick line if you think the poster is useful (email addresses on the news story).

Why? Because this was the first time I can remember seeing something from the College that is so even-handed about the responsibilities of pet owners vs veterinary professionals, and that thinking surely needs to be encouraged.

Could it lead to other ways that the College can support and underpin what you say to clients without in any way compromising its position as Regulator (as I think has been achieved with this poster).

At the very least, you might think it is a good idea that this poster is reviewed and updated and freshened up periodically. If you do, then for god's sake get your approval on record now and email the College!

The big moment has arrived ...

It has taken a while to get here, but I am very over-excited to announce that the RCVS has today sent all practices a poster for your waiting rooms which outlines what pet owners and vets should expect from each other.

For those of you who are new to the this, the idea was first floated in the forums by Jonathan Wray MRCVS, who’d seen a similar thing in France.

I thought it sounded a good idea, so created a draft with input from VetSurgeon members, submitted it to the College, and then worked with them to get it to the final version which has now been approved by Standards.

I’m slightly nervous that if I big this up too much, the reaction will be a bit: ‘so what?’

Too late now, I guess.

I think this is a big deal because it’s the first time I have ever seen the RCVS produce something which is even-handed in the way it talks about the responsibilities of pet owners and vets.

In that sense, I see it as something that is really supportive of some of the things that you have to get across to clients.

I hope very much that you will display the poster in your practice.

And if you like it, please DO drop the RCVS a one line email to say so.

It’s easy to moan when an organisation does something you disapprove of, which makes it so much more important to show appreciation if you think they’ve got it right!
