It wouldn't .

I was once advised by an accountant that any locum term exceeding a continuous month, or a regular locum such as 1 day a week or every other weekend for example, could be viewed by HMRC as being PAYE employed.

I think that Judith meant she would be paying the locum £30k more than she was paid, not £30k in total. I don’t think as a side note that it would be tax allowable to pay as a locum if they were working full time for one practice anyway?

I've recently started locum work, having been continuously employed for >14 years since graduation. Brave new world! I very strongly feel I am there to do the best job possible for the practice. To more than cover my costs if possible and ensure I maintain the reputation of the practice and loyalty of the clients. I give thorough debriefs of ongoing cases; especially those where clients express concern over continuity of care. I want to leave at the end of the day knowing I've done the best possible job and given good value for money.

I assume you don't actually mean full time? If you do, you're massively underpaid!

There's a simple answer if you don't think they're worth what they're asking.

I’ve been approached by a locum who wants “ a permanent full time role” but wants to be paid as a locum! I estimated I’d be paying her approx. £30,000 a year ( by the time agency fees were added in plus the ridiculous daily rate she expected) MORE than I pay myself!

We have been approached by locums seeking permanent positions after stints, they like the Facilities equipment and Support staff ,I do try and do without, but vets do tend to form couples which leaves a bigger hole to fill at holiday times and as we are working towards a 4 day working week and a 10 month working year (at the moment still an ambition sadly ) for everyone ,you have to bite the bullet and engage with reality.

Presumably folk factor in locum costs to their business plans? cover for staff on holiday is predicable and inevitable. There is always the unexpected I suppose, illness etc, do folk factor this in, or take out insurance to cover it?

My rate is not that far removed from what an employed experienced colleague would earn, once NIC, holidays etc. have all been factored in.

I see my role as filling a gap, holding the fort, plugging a hole, keeping the wolf from the door; or dealing with any problems and to just keep things ticking over while the regular colleague is away.

It would be rare for me to generate as much revenue as a regular colleague; some clients will not see a locum, sometimes reception put them off until Mr X is back, and also I am unlikely to embark on extensive or complicated elective procedures or investigations if I am not going to be around to follow them through. I would like to think I do enough work to more than cover my fees, but it is usually outside of my control.

In the dim and distant past we would have locums that would arrive with enthusiasm and set to work. It was always good to see turnover maintained.

Some years back I had the misfortune to have a locum just about to set up on his own. It seems the time with us was spent more on these plans than on working. The result was a disaster and I found myself moving money about to cover staff wages. To add insult to injury there was little work to come back to either.

I respect locums highly (almost all of the time) because I like to work in familiar territory and would not locum but a few seem to forget that their actions can have repercussions after they are gone.
