We are looking at costing up adding a progesterone analyser but I can't find anyone who uses these (apart from some charming non-vet brachycephalic enthusiasts whose opinion I don't value highly).
Criteria are: quantitative, reliable and as cheap

RE: Benchtop progesterone analyser

The Idexx rep told me today that they will release a Progesterone test for their Catalyst machine this year.

RE: Benchtop progesterone analyser

We send the pre-mate tests away and usually get results the next day, although not ideal. One of my clients gets us to take the blood then delivers it to the lab herself to speed it up!

Does anyone still do vaginal swabs and cytology? I've done them in conjunction with the blood tests and find they compare pretty well, although I never advise the client they can be relied upon

RE: Benchtop progesterone analyser

An update - bitch who comes into season once a year failed to get pregnant at last mating. Advised on best timing of mating based on Target Ovulation kit results. Happy to report I have just scanned her 5.5 weeks later and at least four puppies seen. Worked well for this patient!

RE: Benchtop progesterone analyser

I don't think the pre-mate tests are that bad TBH. I've used hundreds and hundreds of the Ridgeway ELISA wells and read them with a plate reader. They are seemingly accurate (when read electronically), but still useful in terms of colour change if you are just interested in high/low.

They do a milk dipstick test that correlates well with lab methods.

Interested in the handheld machine, have you asked for a price for the machine and price per test?

RE: Benchtop progesterone analyser

The VetLab Target Ovulation Test kit turns blue not pink

We recently advised an owner on when to mate their bitch on the basis of the results of this test. She failed to get pregnant at the last mating and only comes into season once a year.

I thought that was the case.
I have found a handheld machine that solely measures progesterone, from AgPlus Diagnostics, that seems to fit our requirements nicely without having to buy a whole new biochem machine or multi-functional analyser so hopefully that will work.
