Oh I miss "the old️ days" (at least some parts!) ... when "sailing close to the wind" with a slightly improper opinion or statement didn't get you prosecuted or locked up for expressing it. It might merely have opened up a hearty discussion or a snort of sneaky cheeky laughter (knowing you shouldn't really have laughed and so you admonished yourself and promised to be a better person next time, of course you would, but then perhaps felt crushed if someone had gotten upset...or devastated if it meant somebody was badly affected by it ... Ooooookay, I get it... But it's not fun to have to be sensible AAaaaaallll the time!!!).

Thanks for your very kind words, and particularly for showing me how to find the archived version.

I'd hoped that their might be room for diversity of thought within the corporate world, but it seems some of my "old opinions" sailed too close to the wind.

Guy Smith I didn't quite get what you meant, till I went to look at the subject of this forum discussion. I saw it was me eulogising about a practice website, so I clicked the link to find it was as dull as ditchwater. So I used https://web.archive.org, to see what it looked like back then.

Then I reread the thread and made the connection ... it was your practice, and it must have been you that wrote the original.

And yes, it has rather, hasn't it (gone lame).

Isn't it kind of representative of life in general when large organisations take over small characterful ones, and then make them fit the bland won't-offend-anyone-model. I wonder why that is. Is it really commercially advantageous to make everything bland? Or is it just that the corporate environment suppresses individuality.

Anyway, I tip my hat to you. That was a wonderful bit of writing.

Better but this is OK

Open from 8.00am to 6.30pm Weekdays, and 9.00am to 11.00 am Saturday.

An appointment system helps to minimize waiting times.

And, if you want, don't book appointments when you want lunch.....

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments, there is far too much cynical and disingenuous marketing in the veterinary profession these days, feeding into a certain type of MOP who think it is possible to get something for nothing (or not very much at any rate).

We have a lot of customers who come to us because they appreciated the frankness of our website, likewise, i imagine we have a lot of customers who don't come to us because they don't like the tone of it... I see that as a great screen, there's no point customers coming to us only to discover later on that they don't see eye to eye with our direct communication, sense of humour or pragmatic approach. As for alienating colleagues, why shouldn't we be proud because we strive to do our own out of hours in the manner that we had envisaged when growing up? (not to mention a daft proportion of our local practice's OOH - while they are conspicuously - and without any irony- regularly updating their practice facebook pages evenings and weekends with info on what constitutes an emergency/toxin/danger, yet commend their clients to emergency practices 20+miles away!). There's nothing superhuman or supervet about us, and yet we manage to provide the out of hours service, it's a shame the majority of the profession have felt it such an easy thing to unburden themselves of. It's an opinion, and it's one which many of the public share i'm afraid, so it merits a mention. I think his point about ooh provision is more that local practices market themselves as 'providing' ooh cover, and yet the truth is that the cover is in fact 20+miles away, with staff they've never met, and not, as the public are allowed to believe, in the direct locale.

bevs2251 could you PM a link to me so I can see which one you are talking about. The issue is not normally date-related, but dependent on which group the thread is in, and whether I have got the settings right for that group. I'm going to go through them all again this morning ...

It is very funny, but perhaps some of his comments are a little unprofessional and others are unkind to colleagues?

But I love the basic truth of this:

(I'll leave this on here for now- it shows a compassionate side ("crazy pet owner") of me that may be less discernable to recent visitors. Ours was already a difficult job, and crazy pet owners with unrealistic expectations, basic budgets and Dr.Google on their shoulder aren't making it any easier.)

Could be worse, Martin. My former boss shot a horse and the bullet came out underneath its chin, just missing his steel-toe-capped boots by a matter of inches! So that could have been worse as well. Should this be in a tangent?

I think its very funny and the sort of spoof website I may set up for a joke with colleagues but its not aimed at me or us and though most of my core clients come to me because I have a similar outlook on life in practice there are more who go elsewhere because they don't like such frankness and many of that group would see it as disingenuous and a joke at their expense. It falls just short of saying, what we all believe, that most clients are a**holes, which is not what they want to hear.

But from a professional point of view, the worst bit is his comments about other vets who don't do their own OOH as if that makes them uncaring and less of a vet than he is. We've had a discussion on that attitude on this forum previously and its unlikely to make him many friends in the profession.

I think he's shooting himself in the foot.
