I just find making clinical decisions so much easier when you don't have to factor in financial restrictions too. That really is my only motivation. Some years ago I asked a client how much they thought a fracture repair would cost and they said £50-£60

That however leads me to add something to this part.

Financial restrictions still apply when the patient is insured. We must make sure we don't just feel free because of this. Otherwise we are putting pressure on insurers unnecessarily and we can easily get to the patient's limit too quickly.

RE: Should you bring up insurance at first puppy consults?

[quote user="Anthony Dennison"]sorry to go off topic slightly, but a sofa in your waiting room?!
We have 2 in the waiting room and one in the "bereavement" room. Its a bit of a pain for the nurses having to wash the throws frequently, but I feel it makes the place a bit less clinical, and makes the animals a bit more relaxed (on or off the sofas!)

RE: Should you bring up insurance at first puppy consults?

Lucy Fleming They'd better not!!!
Not a clue! I brought up insurance, and explained how expensive it could be, say, for example if their pup (which had been placed in the sofa in the waiting room and allowed to fall off) fractured its leg doing similar. Her eyes widened at the cost and then she said "Yeah, but if you didn't have the money the vet would fix it anyway, wouldn't they? Because you all love animals so much!"

My vet student's eyes nearly fell out of her head. I had the job of explaining to Ms Incredulous client that no, we don't and can't work for free!
