Ive long thought this is a positive progression for this site. I would ask for ease of navigation from the home page. perhaps a drop down under the current posts bit? Good move Arlo

Jill, I think you're misunderstanding how the new setup works. The answer to your question is YES, it is HUGELY advantageous!

The main forum (the one you are on now, I guess) presents an aggregate of ALL posts in ALL the groups. So any time someone posts in Anaesthesia, or in Cardiology or in Exotics, it appears in the main site forum for all you generalists.

The great benefit of having groups which only display the subject specific content is that it curates info for:

a) Specialists and contributing experts who want to help on a given topic, but don't have time to wade through all the posts in the aggregate list view (which are not always especially helpfully titled anyway!)

b) Anyone studying for an advanced qualification in a given subject, who again wants to focus on a specific area.

c) Anyone else who just has a special interest or favourite subject that they like to focus on more than others.

As I say, it doesn't take anything away from the existing experience, it just adds something for those who want to focus on a given area.

I hate to be a party pooper, but is it really advantageous to separate the groups into specialisms...? 90% of vets are generalists within their chosen species, and so we see cases of all types (and there is the overlap Liz mentioned too) and so we have to be alert to, if not interested, in all types of cases. It seems like a pain to have to join and visit each page rather than just scroll through the current active list and just think 'hey, that's interesting'.

Trouble with oncology is there is SO much overlap with clinical pathology, medicine, soft tissue surgery, neurology, opthalm.... you get the idea. This way, the different flavours of neoplasia should appear within the relevant 'ology'. There are also neoplasia tags within all the galleries so you can simply search for neoplasia to see different oncology cases.

That was the thinking.

Oh I seeeeeee what you mean.

At the moment, only small animal has subsections (ie medicine, ophthalmology etc), so all those listed are small animal. Farm animal, exotic and equine discussions all go in their one forum for the time being.

You are right, I should perhaps precede medicine with Small Animal, but that would mean preceding most of the others like that, and that would be very repetitive. But I could have a word with the techies and see if we can do a tree type menu ...

Meantime, if its an ology area, it's small animal. And all farm animal, exotic or equine should go in their respective 'catch all' forums.

Sounds like you are using the old 'Write a New Post' link which is being phased out. If you use the new blue box at the top of the list of latest posts, you first choose clinical or non clinical, then small animal / farm animal / exotic / equine, and then if small animal, more specific ologies, like medicine.

In other words, it is much more logical if you use the new system - I only kept the old 'write a new post' link in there so there was a back up in case of bugs with the new way of posting.

There's no 'small animal' section, and if you click on 'medicine' it goes to 'small animal medicine'. Since there are 'Farm animal' and 'equine' headings, for consistency there should be a 'small animal' heading. Not all medicine is small animal! So maybe fewer initial headings and more sub-headings?

You're a life saver ... I hadn't configured that correctly. And I'd made the same mistake on the farm animal and equine groups. Now fixed. If you click 'clinical' in the blue box, you should now be presented with the choice between small animal, farm animal, exotics and equine.

Small animal further subdivides into the ologies. The other three may do in the future, depending on demand.

Sorry to add to it, but I've just used the 'write new post' box at the top of the page, and I couldn't see exotics as one of the topic choices? I've put it in 'medicine'
