Fair point. I didn't put figures in my post because I can't remember them off the top of my head, but I think I was offered a basic salary of around £55k with performance related pay pushing it up to about £75k over the first 12 months. But I didn't take the job, so I wouldn't be able to say if that was worth it.

RE: Clinical director role and salary

The information provided so far has been great but only one person has given an idea of wages so far. However I'm not sure what the going rate is for a clinical director! Obviously it depends on the size of the practice and location in the country but I'm hoping for a few ball park figures to help me when I'm discussing a package. I have 10 years experience in small animal practice and would personally be looking after one 'branch/practice' with 2 other vets, 4 nurses and 2 receptionists - so not a huge team I guess but it is a growing practice
CVS have a national pay bandings published (internally) for all roles including vets (at levels 1 to 4) and clinical directors (at levels 1 & 2 then senior CD role), and defined bonus scheme (practice, vets, CDs etc.)
what you would expect from the clinical director role itself
Probably depends on which corporate - PM me about CVS
Would it actually encompass other practice admin as well
Ultimately most things with how the practice it is the CDs job to be on top of, but delegate delegate delegate. Particularly to the practice manager - I'd worry about trying to do the CD role (ie still doing a fair proportion of clincal vet work) without a PM - but also to head nurse, reception team leader, and then down to other people.
major HR in a corporate usually goes above the CD's pay grade
Agree, we have good support from HR advisers and HR admin.

RE: Clinical director role and salary

I would wait to get full and detailed job description and salary offer before making decisions. Wait for them to make a salary offer before jumping in feet first. However they will need an idea of your skills and experience.

Consider the hassle of HR carefully - could be stressful if you are on site manager doing minor HR but with someone higher in management making bigger decisions, with you at the prickly end.

If you are offered a bonus scheme based on branch performance but have no control over hiring staff that could be frustrating - it happens! If there is a branch or local admin manager or nurse/manager definitely ensure you have a chat with them as a clash of personalities here would be disastrous.

Before accepting a position then get a chance to chat to other staff and have a chat to another director in the same company doing a similar job. If you are not given access to other staff before making a decision, if offered the job, I would forget it. Put all your cards on the table in an open, frank discussion at the outset and voice any concerns ie Start as you mean to go on. They will be disappointed if they employ a yes-man who turns out to be a control freak, or a strong manager who turns out to be easily manipulated by co-workers.

I hope it works out and you find a satisfying job. Good luck.

Around 20-25% of your gross turnover ex VAT is a rough guide. i.e. If you can turn around 300k in your locale then you need to be asking for 60-75k salary. Or, look for a lower set rate plus whatever bonus is on offer if you are working your socks off. 'Clinical Director' often times means 'person who deals with a lot of the sh*t who isn't themselves a partner', so there should be some recompense for that. It usually means sorting things out after hours or during unsociable times and tends to have a bit more pressure associated with it than just the day-to-day vetting. Dealing with minor HR is part of it; major HR in a corporate usually goes above the CD's pay grade. rotas, debt, possibly budgeting, looking at clinical KPI can all be part of it depending on who you work for, but as you mentioned, clinical standards, workload planning, drugs and therapeutics protocols etc are more likely. Hope that is of some use and doesn't put you off entirely! it is a very useful thing to have experience at if you ever wish to own your own practice.

RE: Clinical director role and salary

Before I start this, I am not a CD but work for IVC at the moment.
Does anyone have any ball park salary ideas for me? I'd be interested to hear thoughts for what I should be on as just an employed vet with my current level of experience as well as specifically for a clinical director role with the additional responsibilities this entails.
I was offered a CD position in the North West at a different practice to where I am but turned it down for personal reasons. Job was a good opportunity, I just didn't feel I was ready for it. There was a basic salary (higher than what I was on), and then performance related pay on top of these. The bonuses wouldn't be there from day one, but would have built up over time and there would have been a bigger income jump more regularly as the situation was reviewed. You may find as a clinically experienced vet there is more of a ceiling on basic salary, but the added extras will make a big difference.
The other thing I would be interested to hear is what you would expect from the clinical director role itself. In my mind the job title implies being the main person responsible for all of the clinical undertakings in the practice - such as protocols, drug stocking, clinical governance, day to say support for other staff etc.
As part of a corporate there are basic protocol structures you can use, however depending on which company, there is some wiggle room for personal additions/tweaks to the protocols. There is a preferred stock list, but if you can provide a reasonable clinical argument as to why you would want something else it can normally be stocked (better prices on the preferred list).

Clinical governance you may not have to do directly, you could ask one of your nurses or vets to do it, but you would have to review it regularly as standards are the CD's responsibility.
Would it actually encompass other practice admin as well or would this be fall under a practice managers role (things like nurse rotas, debt collection, payroll stuff)?
Depends if you had a practice manager. The local business support managers are usually pretty helpful with getting things going and setting stuff up. You may not have to input the data yourself personally into payroll but the budget will be your responsibility (with a lot of help from the corporate support team while you get used to it) so things like equipment purchasing, salaries etc will be deferred for you to handle.

The job description will give a lot more information, but there are CD's out there who are amazing vets but lack management skills; although they can do some of it they get more support from the regional corporate teams than others might. You won't be left to do it all on your own at any point, unless you wanted to.

Hope that helps!

RE: Clinical director role and salary

not in corporate situation but would have thought your main responsibility is the clinical excellence for the practice so you would be the quality control. Would not have thought staff etc in your remit. Unfortunately these things tend to creep unless people have defined roles so as you say, get job description

10 years qualified - depends on your skills - if you can routinely do TTA's for eg, full cardiac u/sound (i.e. bring in high earning cases) then +-£50k+ for normal full time vet, add £12 - £24k for extra duties depending on area/ turnover/ OOH?
