Uncanny - we lived at the junction of Youngsdale Place and Station Brae, I think it was no. 2 (but it was a long time ago!). If you tell me that's where your parents live I think that would officially be stalking Actually I think it's on the other side of the road from yours.

How funny. My parents live about a third of the way up Station Brae (as did I when I lived there) on one of the little lanes on the left. They have that same amazing view! I went to Madras, and am now working in England in the deepest darkest East Midlands, for a boss who went to Bell Baxter. Small world indeed!

We moved there from the wilds of Rutherglen, so a pleasant change! There was a choice (I think probably dependent on 11+ results?) of two secondary schools in Newport at that time, Madras in St Andrews or Bell Baxter in Cupar, Fife. We moved away just before I was due to move up from primary though, so I never attended either. Ended up back at primary school in Cuffley, Hertfordshire as the age in England for changing schools was different, quite a strange experience if I recall correctly.

We lived near the top of Station brae, the views from the upstairs bedroom windows across the roofs of the village, the firth of Tay with the railway bridge and then out to Dundee and the Law were magnificent. I have adored roofscapes ever since as a result!

Wow! I have such fond memories of Newport. I left probably around 1970, occasionally I get back there and it has changed a little though not as much as some places have. My old primary school is now a housing estate, that did bring a bit of a tear to my eye, I have to say.

Blimey, I remember bob-a-job week with a mixture of excitement and dread! I did it a few years in the 60's and early 70's in the Fife village of Newport-on-Tay. The dread of going to someone's door and ringing the bell then asking if they wanted a job done. The requests were so variable, sometimes it would be a token thing, other people would ask for the car to be cleaned or half the garden to be dug. But if you'd put a lot of effort in or it was a long task like that some folks would give you more than the basic 'bob' (that's a shilling or 5p to the younger sorts on the list). But some didn't - even in those days a shilling for cleaning a whole car was extremely tight!

And then once we'd done the job they got a yellow, glue-backed lickable sticker with a big tick on it to put in the window to deter further enquiries. I can still remember the taste of the glue today!

Can't see that sort of thing being allowed today for all sorts of reasons, there are minimum wage regulations to consider, working time allowance, child labour laws and I don't even think the glue was vegan-friendly

Reading about all of you, I have led a heltered life! The only jobs have been vet/animal related . My first: a veterinary nurse/dogsbody at the local practice for six years, mostly but not entirely at weekends. Then at a dog-kennel for more experience. A dairy and sheep farm a few times. After those it was university and that as it. I guess we are not counting Bob-a-Job week with Cub-scouts?

In my dreams I've been paid to ride my bike but not for real in this lifetime unfortunately!

Worked in a newsagents whilst at college, then various summer jobs including a week in a contact lens factory. A stint at the local motorway service station on the M27, a year working for Boots in between degrees, and of course Bar work to supplement my student income. All of which I think helped me to learn to deal the general public!

What is it with vets and Roman history! My co-author, Alex Gough has also written a series of books set in ancient Rome (http://www.romanfiction.com/) and so has Benoit Severac, a friend of mine who teaches in the English department of Toulouse vet school (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pax-Romana-Aquitania-Murders-Thrillers/dp/1929631979).

P.S. I suppose that is another paid job I've done, other than vetting - writing "No Way To Treat A Friend" with Alex (see my sig line). It's one of the my proudest achievement and while, strictly speaking, it is paid let's just say that JK Rowling has very little to worry about at this stage in the game .

Manda Scott, best selling author of crime novels and the Boudica series set in Pre-Roman Britain, is also a vet. There’s others too out there! I’ve a got a first draft of a novel that involves the Antonine Wall that’s been languishing in a drawer for 20 years. One day……

Festive Postie in Kirkcaldy, fruit and veg delivery van man meandering along the scenic Fife Coast in my own wee world, local radio presenter, TV Magazine presenter, folk ‘musician’, entertainer, dead turkey inspector, Pantomime Dame (oh yes I have), dance technician, ceilidh band bass & guitar, graveyard grass cutter (10 years now!!) , and currently Children’s Book seller in son's business The Children's Bookshelf where all books are only £2:00 when doing Pop-Ups in primary Schools. Some jobs for shorter periods of time than others.

I’ve just remembered another paid job I had, although the pay was negligible. As part of a gang I dug up the turf for Glasgow University in archaeological digs of Roman marching camps along a part of the Antonine Wall. We were overseen by an eminent Professor of Roman History and Archaeology, his comb-over streaming out 3 feet like a rallying banner as he urged us on. When something of potential interest was discovered, we were pushed back to stand, sweating in the sun to wait while the tiny brushes came out for the delicate work. We called ourselves the shit shovelers and were glad to discover local girls to talk to. Years later I came across the papers written about those digs. Always loved Roman history!
