This has been us since having kids (6 years to date), and it's been lovely. But we've just been invited to a friends house for the kids to sleep over and us to have dinner and drink to the small hours. Lovely though it is to regain a social life, I'm not overly enthusiastic about staying up late and missing my bed!

Whatever NYE brings, I wish everyone a happy 2019! I know 2018 has been a difficult year for some, and we face a challenging year ahead (politically at the very least). My hope is that through mutual support of friends, family, colleagues and each other, we each make the best of whatever comes our way.

New Year has become a really nice time in our family. We all do a quiet Christmas at home, then on Hogmanay I have all my cousins and their families, and my dad's side round for food and a party, which goes on until the wee small hours. The kids all entertain themselves while the adults usually end up in hysterics over some stupid game or other. I don't see that side of the family all that often, but when we get together it is great fun, and very relaxed! Off out to buy the food after I finish here, hoping the shops wont' be too mental....

I hope everyone is managing to have some relaxing time off with family and friends. My wife has become my designated driver for the last 3 weeks because I slipped on ice and dislocated my elbow. The NHS again proved to be superb. That’s meant a few extra glasses of wine! I’m not a huge fan of Hogmanay because I used to work them all to get Christmas off. Might make an effort this year if I can stay up that long. Best wishes to all for a healthy, happy and successful year in 2019!

[/quote]In the Atkinson household we have Christmas dinner in the evening and the 'guests' (it was only my sister in law and one of the daughters' boyfriend - doesn't he have a home to go to?) don't arrive until then so no need to prepare the day before. I went for a 40 mile bike ride on blissfully empty roads, partly I'll admit to avoid going round to 'friends' for lunchtime drinks but I must have gone too fast as I got back in time to go with the rest of the family. Bah humbug.

Only I'll stay awake until Jools Holland squeaks, then its straight to bed only to be kept awake by the bloody fireworks!

I don't. Last two years I've only stayed up until past midnight to be polite. This year we'll be having a nice meal at the in-laws, and I'll then doze on the sofa until Jools Holland shouts 'Happy New Year!' in his squeaky voice, which will wake me up.

Every bloody year the Queen, Pope and Archbishop of C. pray to God for peace etc. Never works - you'd have thought by now they would have realised - 'Bloody hell - the old b*gger just doesn't listen to me - you know what - next year I shan't even bother...'

You can bet your life we'll still have war, pestilence, famine, earthquakes, Brexit, Boris, Trump, Strictly Come Dancing etc. etc.

So pleased you had a good Christmas, Arlo!

Ours was ok, although middle daughter brought some horrible lurgy back from school last week and we have all been going down like dominos! Horrible flu-y thing, meant Christmas was a bit rubbish, and then back to work feeling like death yesterday!

Feeling a little better today, happily, now just feels like a horrid cold/ cough! Hoping we will all be recovered for Hogmanay, as I usually host the party...

Meanwhile, in the Guthrie household, the mask someone bought to help hide my double chin had an unfortunate side-effect ...

Thanks for everyone's kind posts ... we did have an NHS free Christmas ... in fact, one of the best in years. Daughter on such good form that she was no longer fooled when I visited her room dressed as Santa in the middle of the night ...

Now limbering up for the New Year, which, unlike Christmas, always seems to come with such enormous pressure to have fun. That's fine when you've got something organised well in advance with old friends. I think ours is going to be a bit more of a lottery this year!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! A brief morning run to de-bouncify the exuberant labrador, then a Bucks Fizz by 10.30 kicked off proceedings. Other than par-boiling the potatoes to the consistency of mash, I pulled off the Christmas spread for us and the in-laws. I've spent all morning compiling Need to Know newsletters through the post over-indulgence fog that inevitably descended.

What Gillian says. I’m doing lots of prep today so I don’t have to be in the kitchen so much tomorrow when the extended family arrive. Presents are wrapped (I used to be a last minute wrapper but trying to get more organised). And handily it was my day off. I’ve also cooked a nice easy lasagne for dinner tonight as we have the family home. Gin and tonic in hand now, so Merry Christmas to all, and hope it is healthy and NHS free for you and the family Arlo.

Potatoes in the fridge ready for roasting. New potatoes in there as well to microwave in mint/butter.

Turkey in our old pharmacy fridge being kept at a precise 5'C. The VMD would be impressed with the temperature control!

Yorkshire pud mix also made up.
