Obviously it depends where you are located but we use Pet Crematorium Services and they collect all the pharmaceutical waste and sharps at a very reasonable rate. Previously we used Cambridge Pet Crematorium but they charged too much for the pharma and sharps so we used DOOP for that but PCS do it all much cheaper, aided mind you by a discount we get through membership of Vetshare buying group. I would have thought that most, if not all, crematoria would have similar facility.

AFAIA you're right about butorphanol, medetomidine and Pentobarb not needing to be denatured but then there is never any left over anyway here.

It still puzzles me however, that if you have such an association with a local practice, why you can't use their arrangements.

RE: Waste

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply.

I appreciate you have questions - but I do have the rest sorted - Yes I am only doing house visits. I have a registered premises - but it literally is just a CD cupboard in the corner of a local veterinary practice. Sourcing clients is through Cloud 9 vets and local practices who have clients who would like a home visit but are too busy to attend (I locum at many of these practices too, so I'm not an unfamiliar face). I have a link to a crematorium who collect the bodies, but had no idea that pharmaceutical waste might be a service they offer - I will check thanks.

So my question was more specific - my understanding is that all scheduled drugs (i.e. not medetomidine and butorphanol) need denaturing - and schedule 3 such as pentobarb doesn't need witnessing officially but it's good practice - is that all correct?

Do most vet practices use their crematorium to get rid of waste? - or can people give me some company names they're using.

Thanks.

RE: Waste

From this post I gather you have no physical veterinary practice and only do house visits for euthanasia otherwise I don't see how this is an issue. Surely, unless all your clients are making their own arrangements, you have to have provision for carcass storage and disposal would not then be a quantum leap to engage the services of the pet crematoria to dispose of your sharps and pharmaceutical waste. And yes like the rest of us you would have to denatured any scheduled drugs and have it witnessed and disposed of correctly.

Which also begs the question of how you find your cases and how you liaise with the primary caring practice so they could assist you in these matter? But more positively you can hang onto the waste for as long as you want so long as it is securely stored.

Forgive me if I've misunderstood and unfairly criticised your modus operendi but if my assumptions are correct then you are the creator of your own problems by not having a 'real' practice and I trust you are obtaining your drugs from a veterinary wholesaler so have to have a licenced premises for these to be delivered and be inspected every 3 years or whenever by VMD. I don't see why any of this should any less expensive for you than for those of us with traditional practices.
