OK very specific but the High Court has said that a cheaper, non-licenced medication can be prescribed for humans on price alone.

For my dog I'd pick the chicken flavoured ones for more money. Easier packaging for the practice and easier to split. Back up from the rep and drug company.

I hate the way the packaging and presentation of some of the human generics keeps changing.

RE: Beginning of the end to cascade on price grounds?
Food producing species are a completely different thing as residues are a risk.
Of course both drugs will have the same licences so, unless one ot the other can show some advantages, the client would, and reasonably, choose the cheaper one. [palatability for small animals may be a factor].

RE: Beginning of the end to cascade on price grounds?

But this is a legal challenge by the pharmaceutical companies to control the prescribing habits of NHS doctors.

If there is no medical reason to prescribe a more expensive product, it is known that a cheaper human one works and the owner has agreed then how is that different to a patient agreeing to have a cheaper (but effective) treatment for the benefit of others using the NHS?

It would be interesting to see how this would be dealt with in court!

Food producing species are a completely different thing as residues are a risk.

It seems to me that this is not a case of someone challenging a 'cascade' that says they must use a licenced product before a generic because they already do, in fact the opposite from the drug companies. While I don't agree with the veterinary cascade I can see that at least medics are using human generics on humans whereas we are arguing about using human generics on animals and there is an argument that they may not work as well/cause unknown side effects in a different species. That they were probably tested on animals to start with and we have millions of examples of them being used efficaciously with no harm is obviously not the point.
