Nope, doesn’t matter at all. Guess I was just saying I’d always thought of it as fairly low level pain relief...but is surprisingly effective!

If you read some of the lab studies there is a strong preference for animals in pain to eat/drink opioid laced things...

RE: so are you a 'calpol' parent or of the 'calpol' generation?

It's different for every individual , that's the problem. I take ibuprofen for period pain and the difference it makes is amazing. From debilitating pain and unable to stand up to feeling completely normal. However I never take anything for colds/flu/cycling injuries as I'd rather let nature take its course. (and don't think it makes that much difference anyway).

My husband is the opposite - he moans like anything and takes paracetamol for any minor virus, yet when he had major joint surgery recently he didn't have any morphine and only took paracetamol for 4 days or so.

How can we know what animals would prefer?

RE: so are you a 'calpol' parent or of the 'calpol' generation?

There is some research that has shown that by giving NSAIDs to suppress fever and thus make the patient feel better it prolongs recovery time as the fever is part of the body's defences against the infection. OK there may be times when you feel so shite that you can't function normally without some relief but animals don't have to carry on working and can just rest until the body heals itself.

My wife takes paracetomol like sweeties, I'm the opposite and won't take anything unless I'm half dead (occasional NSAIDs for chronic joint swelling/pain so I can keep running/cycling/skiing excepted)!

I even refuse opioids after orthopaedic surgery because I feel dysfunctional and nauseous and would rather put up with pain. How do we know that given the choice animals would not feel the same.
