I'm interested in what packages new grads are getting now for a 40 hour week with no OOH. Do clinics still offer housing and cars? We are offering around 30k in Cambs/Norfolk border and not getting a lot of interest.

RE: New grads

House and car in addition/allowance given
What that is worth to the candidate can vary wildly - I had my own car and no desire to live above the practice! And has the tax treatment of housing and cars not changed - for the worse - over the years?
yes the tax situation is vastly different now / worse.

Accommodation can be tax free IF required to carry out the job , ie near practice. If an allowance is paid to the vet , it's taxable as benefit in kind. If the practice pays for the accommodation directly ( ie straight to landlord) , not taxable , as long as reasonable ie not a mansion.

Company car nightmare tax, if a van / commercial vehicle , is flat rate for benefit in kind plus flat rate for private fuel use. A car will be taxed based on emissions and NEW value, so even if car is old the tax will be high. Need to speak to accountant for detail.

RE: New grads
House and car in addition/allowance given
What is the total package worth - housing and cars added to basic pay? In 2004 as a new grad in Cambridgeshire I started on £26.5k basic, for approx 42-48hrs/week and 1 in 5 overtime, plus fuel allowance given; no housing/car. If such a wage kept up with RPI inflation that would now be £38.8k, or if had increased in line with average wage growth (as per ONS average weekly earnings growth) it would be £37.4k.

Also, recent experience suggests it's a good job market if you are a new grad, and can drive a good deal...

RE: New grads

Some do, some don't. I used to work around that area. 30K is ok for cambs as a salary if you're giving a house and car separately but if that's your whole package I'd say that was a little low. New grads are often attracted by generous living allowances because housing in that part of the UK is a nightmare whether you're renting or buying.

Other issues you may have to contend with - the ball of choice of jobs is very much in the employee's court right now. Also as lovely as it is (I adored living in that area) it's definitely very difficult to attract people to Norfolk in particular so higher salaries are often a good incentive (let's call it danger pay?)
