They have no permanent vet or RVN's, and rely on staff from within the group or locums.
On my first day I noticed

RE: No broach dates
if you have computer records, you can probably just check the dispensing of a given drug to see amount used and when and figure fairly easily if a given bottle was opened in the last month or not etc.
Up to a point, but with sometimes 3 bottles of the same drug open, one can not be sure recording on the PMS of batch number is accurate. The nurses worked out that most opened bottles of commonly used drugs had arrived within an order from the suppliers within the last month or so. Many of the less commonly used ones were OOD anyway.

RE: No broach dates

My question was really more; what should a new employee or locum do on their first day in such a situation? do you date the bottles and carry on? carry on without dates? order new of everything?
Haven't you just answered your own question?
I guess. I just wondered how seriously others would take the regulations. I didn't particularly, but if I worked there for much longer I probably would.

Amazed that a large number of M'sRCVS before me have not written dates on newly opened bottles or recorded CD's. Even as a locum one is obliged too.

RE: No broach dates

if you have computer records, you can probably just check the dispensing of a given drug to see amount used and when and figure fairly easily if a given bottle was opened in the last month or not etc.

RE: No broach dates
My question was really more; what should a new employee or locum do on their first day in such a situation? do you date the bottles and carry on? carry on without dates? order new of everything?
Haven't you just answered your own question?

RE: No broach dates

I have let the powers that be know, so fairly confident all will rectified in due course.

Yes, common sense down on planet real world did prevail I hope; I continued to use what was there, open and looked ok as long as within use by date. It's a busy practice, so tend to get though stock fairly quickly.

With CD, I did a stock take so that I could then record remaining amounts as well as what is used, as I am obliged to do so.

My question was really more; what should a new employee or locum do on their first day in such a situation? do you date the bottles and carry on? carry on without dates? order new of everything?

RE: No broach dates

Knowing the common sense feeling amongst most of us, even though we will comply with the regulations as we're law abiding citizens, I would take the view that if the non CDs which don't have broach dates but are within their use-by date, don't look manky and seem to have been stored correctly, that they are OK to use. Out of date drugs are obviously easier, if you have a choice don't use them albeit again common sense suggests that they won't stop working the day/week/even a few months after their use by date.

As for the CD situation, even though as Bob suggests this is the serious issue, I can't see what has happened in the past is your problem/responsibility so I would just record what I use correctly, not necessarily perform an actual stock take but note there is an anomaly in whats been used v whats left, but mention it to the most senior member of staff you have access to.

RE: No broach dates

Most of the corporates have Clinical Directors and Area Directors (who are vets) - I would tell one of them about your findings. Clearly they need to get their act in order - it would seem a case of nobody being in charge at the actual premises.

Most practices taken over by the big corporate players these days are soon entered for PSS if they are not already accredited. The would certainly have to address these issues before a PSS visit. One wonders if they have had a VMD visit in recent times. Their CD issues would be regarded as pretty serious.
