Had many cases now where it has been raised on a routine screen, but BUN, Crea, phos and urinalysis are all normal. Have then warned owners that possibility of early renal disease. Then in some cases 18 months to 2 years later, BUN and crea are still wnl, and there are no clinical sign associated with renal disease.

RE: SDMA
I was interested. I've seen at least one patient with normal SDMA and too high Urea/Crea values.

How reliable is SDMA to determine kidney injury in terms of specificity?
I wonder if this case had pre-renal or acute renal disease so the SDMA hadn't had time to rise so it may not be reliable in these cases. It would be interesting to know if this case returned to normal or was CKD.
Question answered thanks
The OP was regarding price of single SDMA test was it not Mark? But would be good to see others thoughts on the usefulness / difficulties in interpretation / misleading results etc. We started using it in rehoming cases, but stopped as we didn't feel we were gaining enough info over urine sample + BP + geriatric biochem to justify the cost.
Can't answer the original question but I would have thought it would be easy to find out!

Having been to CPD where it was discussed the jury with specialists seems to be out on its usefulness, certainly in cases where there is already some azotaemia it is pointless but in cases like Francisco's we culd speculate that it could separate AKD from CKD cases.

I have used it in a few cats which have shown symptoms suspicious of CKD and acted at face value if its been raised and started them on a protein/Phosphate restricted diet.

It begs the question whether it should be used as a routine screen on older cats as a 'just in case' test but where do you stop with that. Again specialists I've spoke to feel its too early in our understanding of the usefulness of the test to justify that

RE: SDMA
Question answered thanks
