My grandson was keen so we got a little book by a rather excitable lady called Karen Garcia, and ingredients, and have spent a very frustrating and disappointing day. Borax on itself can't be purchased in Germany due it's potential toxicity, so we had to find something else that worked, I didn't want to order stuff from China on eBay.
What recipe did you use? You need liquid glue and washing liquid. The problem lies within the washing liquid, because it has to contain borax, otherwise it won't work. We've had the same failure until we googled for brands off washing liquid that work. You can then add shaving foam or body lotion to alter texture. As I'm based in Germany I can't help with the brands I'm afraid, but at least that's what solved the problem for us. Good luck!

[/quote]

Ah....ha! We started with the "correct" recipe of PVA glue and liquid starch. Nobody mentioned borax. Perhaps in the USA liquid starch always contains borax? it never occurred to me that a washing liquid would work, thinking that a detergent would produce the opposite effect to that required. We also tried corn meal (corn starch, same stuff) of which for certain reasons I have a good supply, then corn meal with hot water to swell the starch grains, in various degrees of hydration, and in desperation kaolin. Then we got fed up, and after a consolatory half hour with Tom and Jerry we went and played with dental impression material and Plaster of Paris. Finally he came and helped with shed-building before it was time to go home.

I do actually have a pound of borax in stock! I may experiment in private.
