I've watched a heap of Youtube videos on slime making and have never told anyone before. If feels strangely cathartic coming out to you all in this way. Strangely satisfying to watch. I hope you work it out!

My younger daughter has a first from Mells University in Slime Production. I'll see if she will come and be a special guest expert on VetSurgeon and give some tips :)

BTW, I will be very proud if VetSurgeon can facilitate the sharing of information on this highly important subject - one that has the potential to have such a profound impact on so many lives .

Of course it would. And it would be even easier to sit the grandchildren in front of the DVD player all day. By the way, this particular one was thrilled to see that Grandpa had a disused Flubber maker in the back storeroom (if you've seen Flubber you will know exactly what I mean).

We ended up using a washing liquid for white fabric, not a washing up liquid. Borax on itself can't be purchased in Germany due it's potential toxicity, so we had to find something else that worked, I didn't want to order stuff from China on eBay. I was however, kind of relieved when the slime had lost its appeal because the smell (glue!) gave me some headache ;-)

Ah....ha! We started with the "correct" recipe of PVA glue and liquid starch. Nobody mentioned borax. Perhaps in the USA liquid starch always contains borax? it never occurred to me that a washing liquid would work, thinking that a detergent would produce the opposite effect to that required. We also tried corn meal (corn starch, same stuff) of which for certain reasons I have a good supply, then corn meal with hot water to swell the starch grains, in various degrees of hydration, and in desperation kaolin. Then we got fed up, and after a consolatory half hour with Tom and Jerry we went and played with dental impression material and Plaster of Paris. Finally he came and helped with shed-building before it was time to go home.

I do actually have a pound of borax in stock! I may experiment in private.

I can't wait until I have grandchildren to take on little adventures (I may not bother making slime mind you). Trouble is at their present rate of mate finding by the time my two daughters have children I might be too old!
