So to avoid this we're on our best behaviour.

Personally, I think one should make a point of hitting the 'thank you' button whenever someone shares a piece of information, or a photo which you have learned something valuable from.

I would probably also thank if someone wrote something so funny, it brightened my day. Hasn't happened since I installed the new system, but there have been quite a few times in the past when I have been chortling away at my desk thinking I want to say thanks, but I don't necessarily want to create a new post just to say thanks.

No, it was one star grumbles unsubstantiated by any evidence at all!

You will have seen recently a sensible discussion about the dreaded 'roids and gingivitis and the reasoned sensible exchange rather than a one star or "disagree" response, which adds nothing to learning,

Similarly "disagree" is a bit pointless without substantiation, and "thank you", seems a given.

It would be too easy just to "disagree" the "fauces" definition too, but substantiation helps education and can still be challenged, and so it should be, if this forum is going to be useful.

I approve of the new system but highlighting the 'best' and 'worst' could have a negative impact on the lurkers unwilling to stick their heads above the parapet!

I very much doubt any of us on those lists are going to be worried about appearing there. Just stick to the system, let it bed in and anyone sad enough to care about the most disagreed person can work it out for themselves!

Don't change what is being done, it is nicer, more helpful and a bit of fun for the very sad statisticians out there.

I think you're both slightly missing the point. The original reason for disagree was just that people wanted a way to express disagreement, and I thought we should have a more transparent, less corrosive way of doing that than 'one star'. Anthony Todd, you may dismiss this as a point-scoring thing, but by the same token, I haven't heard any grumbles from you since we introduced the new system (where your one star grumbles were a weekly feature!)

I thought as an extension of that 'Agree' adds something useful to the discussion, ie to know whether someone's opinion is widely agreed with or not.

But for me, 'Thank You' is the most important thing. This site is all about sharing. Sharing knowledge, sharing ideas, sharing experience. People take time and effort to share stuff, and I think it is so important that this is properly appreciated and thanked for.

So if I am honest, quite happy not to publish league of 'agreed with', 'disagreed with', or 'liked'. Those numbers just appear next to users' forum posts.

But what I really DO want to do is highlight and reward the MOST THANKED. In other words the people who give the most to the community.

I am working on being able to analyse most thanked within given time frames and according to specific forums, discussions and photo galleries, so it won't always be the same person.

I don't actually give a monkeys where I fit into the stats nor whether my name goes up in lights or plummets like a stone. I would happily be the least helpful, most miserable, most useless twit but I would want a badge!

I have some concerns that it might put off those we are really trying to encourage to join in with the discussions so the boring old/younger/young f*rts can be diluted a bit.

Perhaps a hero of the month award could be awarded but I bet Evelyn would win it most months and Jerry Poulton the months when he gets involved. A sprinkling of the other specialists filling in gaps.

a drawback I can see would be encouraging turbo posting, increasing smarminess and crowdpleasing in pursuit of likes and less frankness and honesty. I’m just interested to see which posts are generally agreed or disagreed with , and to like those who make me smile or where someone has gone out if their way to be helpful and supportive. The overall totals don’t really interest me that much

It is early days with all this, but I wonder, Bob Russell and bob lehner and anyone else who didn't like me sharing the top performers, so to speak ...

I presume (tell me if I am wrong) that you don't have any problem with me sharing the 'most thanked' or the 'most liked', or the 'most agreed with', because these are all positive things.

So it must be the most disagreed with you don't like. I was coming at it thinking nobody minds being disagreed with (and certainly at this very early stage, it doesn't mean anything much, because as you said Bob, can be based on one post).

But perhaps listing the top 4 'most disagreed with' IS in fact a more negative thing for someone in the top 4 than I was thinking.

So how about this:

a) I share the positives (most thanked, liked, and agreed with) as rankings.

b) I use agree / disagree data to share 'Highest Agree Ratio'

c) I do NOT share rankings of most disagreed with. You can see someone's agrees and disagrees adjacent to their posts.

Incidentally, in the future I think it should be possible to show agrees and disagrees per post or forum, which would mean communists like Francisco Gomez could express their political views without it affecting the rating for their clinical opinion

Certain posts will obviously skew data; and it's impossible to separate non-clinical from clinical reactions (if that's important?). However, it should be pretty representative over the long term. I think the goals here are:

- encourage engagement from members

- encourage thoughtfulness of posts to ensure the tone is supportive, even when disagreeing. (Unless the most disagreed becomes the badge of ironic honour

- obviously, to reward helpful contributors. And who doesn't love winning a prize? (apart from me - I never bl**dy win anything!).

As Arlo has said, the stats are already there, but we don't necessarily have to rank people publicly (if you have the time to do so privately, knock yourself out )

I think a percentage system would work well, though there would need to be a minimum of posts I suspect.
