Looking at the effects of Brexit from another point of view, it gives the UK a chance to tighten up the lax rules that allow semi/illegal imports of puppies. It also could help reduce the importation of what are often street dogs from unsuitable parts of Europe.

This should be looked upon as an opportunity rather than a threat although perhaps now a bit late as 'exotic' ticks and vector borne diseases have already arrived.

As a very wise friend used to say when I winged about the practice I was in, 'not a problem but an opportunity'!

Not directly relevant, but purely for interest, while on the topic of politics and pet passports and referendums, here's the reported opinion of the Scottish Government at the time of their last independence referendum on what the effects of Scotland and England being independent EU member states might have been - apparently no pet passport needed to travel (I'd thought this might be a nice wee earner for border vets). I'm pretty sure that on leaving the UK, dogs will continue to cross the Irish border without issue or threat of prosecution by either side - the pragmatic approach to pointless bureaucratic requirements is simply not to enforce them, or at least not to finance the enforcement of them (the UK never did seem to get the hang of this as an EU member state...)

Hi Francisco,

in my opinion, IF the UK leaves the EU without any transitional period and any agreement, the EHIC card for humans and the PET Passport for animals, that are meant to make it easy for EU members/agreements travelling into the EU, won't be valid anymore. Probably instead of the non commercial movement of pets within the EU, the non commercial movement of pets from non-EU countries will apply. You can have a look on the ec.europa.eu website, it's well described. One of the requirements is the Rabies antibody test.

I think they stopped at 12 even though there are 27 member states. No need to reduce by one even when the UK leaves.

Or even better. We don't even need new ones. We could do this to the older ones.

I'm sure it'll be cheaper than filling one of those export certificates that DEFRA sends you 5 days before travelling! And on the plus side, they wouldn't even need to have an EU passport issued if they want to travel further than/via France!

The PETS passport scheme is not EU exclusive. There is no reason why it should not continue except spite. The EU commission might decide the UK is not a listed country but that would be mischief making and rather pathetic.

The main issue I see is that the front page will have to be redesigned without the EU stars. Hardly a major problem.

But Francisco, is this really a problem? If there is no deal then UK will be considered a third listed country by the EU and EU already has rules in place for these countries. If there will be a deal, happy days, we will continue with passports or whatever the deal will be.

Yet a number of non-EU countries (google suggests Switzerland, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and the Vatican) currently issue pet passports which are accepted for movement in the EU

Imports wouldn't be a problem. The UK will be, on their own right, able to determine which rules apply and decide unilaterally if it wants to accept EU PET Passports at face value. Other countries do this currently. It can be implemented from day 1.

I guess either we would look to become another country outside the EU that operates within the EU passport scheme (like Switzerland, Norway etc) or we would look to become a listed country and import into the UK would be based on the existing rules for listed countries (like people currently bringing their pet from the USA).

Perhaps my question wasn't clear.

I understand it is easy to move animals that currently have a passport.

I'm referring of not being able to acquire and sign passports. I have clients asking me about going to France and issue a passport for October. Some people will need to start booking holidays soon. Shouldn't be there a default option. Ie import certificate or something of the sort?

Who really know where Brexit's going, but I guess we'll continue to - initially - run on the same rules. Various non-EU countries such as Switzerland run on same rules as EU today. Whether in the future there will be de-harmonisation as mentioned in the Vet Record this week - eg on tick control - we'll see

I didn't receive any information from APHA. Until that happens it's all speculations.

Pets can be moved in and out of the EU to and from all other countries around the globe. Easy this one!
