Yes the joke was that it was German word, now almost part of our language as the English would not have thought of such a concept..

But its now Skadegladje! since Saturday. (Swedish obviously, with whatever is an umlaut in Swedish on the 'a')

Doesn't have the same ring to it though.

Must look up the Croatian in preparation...

[/quote]Being largely monolingual TBH I wouldn't have known the word if it hadn't been plastered over the popular press, and assuming that Tim was an intelligent person who reads broadsheets and like me having devoted so much time to his scientific education was similarly illiterate in foreign languages he hadn't sussed it. Does that get me out of jail?

The irony is that the majority of readers of said popular press probably know less German than me.

We won't be supporting Argentina down here (Falkland Islands). In fact I think they're very lucky to have scraped through the group stage. I think England's chances are as good as any of the other teams from here on in. From a sweepstake point of view I will be supporting Denmark and Switzerland.

Incidentally, I actually had some time to sit and watch most of a match last night: Portugal v Iran. I found myself strangely unable to decide who I wanted to lose: Portugal because I hate Ronaldo with a vengeance (it would have really made my day if he'd been sent off as well as missing the penalty and they'd lost because of that) or Iran because of their human rights record. I looked at the Iranian women in the crowd enjoying themselves with no inhibitions and thought that they could not do this at home (OK I know in theory they can go to matches now but not easily in practice, certainly not with heads unadorned or in a crowd with men) and worried what may befall them when they go home if they can be identified for indulging in such 'wanton behaviour'.

Wide open for me, whilst there's plenty of dross, no team have looked that good, not even the Germans. Belgium too many egos, I don't think they'll get through next round. Spain are a team waiting to be smashed.

Refreshing to see England playing with some verve and a relative lack of pressure, no obvious celebrity hungry clowns or wags in the set up, fancy us to overturn Belgium by the odd goal.

Young team having fun is what counts for me!
