Excellent! I have no idea why we don't go to Scotland more often (both those beach photos were taken in the middle of the afternoon on beautiful hot days - yet the beaches are empty!). Well, actually I was brought up in the Highlands and I don't remember the sun shining very often.... We borrowed the campervan from my parents in Fife, chucked the dogs in, went up the east coast, along the top and down the west coast. We were all (the dogs, my husband and I) very brown, scruffy and covered in sand by the time we returned. Our best holiday in years!

RE: The best summer ever

Wren, I'm just back from that beach in Durness!
It's Oldshoremore beach, near Kinlochbervie. This is the beach at Durness, pretty much next door to Tongue. Oh Wow, Judith. Walking about with a fractured mandible....you were made of tough stuff. You mentioning the FA cup, made me look at 1976 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976

It’s amazing what was happening in the World when I was 15-16 and I was completely unaware of it, apart from the music, some of the politicians, Entebbe and the events in Cambodia. I knew of the three UK mercenaries who were shot by firing squad in Angola because we had a lad in our class who was a real bully and who became a mercenary in Angola too and was also killed but in another incident. And our classroom glue sniffers....Happy days but not for some

RE: The best summer ever

Niall....I remember 1976!
Hi Edward . It's a while since I attended the last climate change lecture down here but I vaguely recollect that historically (like millions of years ago) CO2 levels in the atmosphere have been as high if not higher than they are now - long before man was doing anything or even existed. I acknowledge what you say about the very quick increase in CO2 levels in the past 120 years and that almost certainly is as a result of human activity but past records indicate that there is also a natural "cycle" in CO2 emissions on our planet. Presumably we can't do a lot about that but I agree that we shouldn't make the situation worse.

RE: The best summer ever
Lots of evidence for it David, this is just one.
Changes of 100ppm CO2 historically have taken 5,000-20,000 years, whereas the recent increase of 100ppm has been in the last 120 years and coincides with the industrial revolution.

RE: The best summer ever
If it is not the only cause it is is certainly a contributory factor and if nothing else if the belief that it is reduces our dependence on fossil fuel and the pollution this causes it is surely a good thing.
I'm not so sure that this is the case. I've attended a few lectures given by climate change scientists from the University of Maine (they are part of a big scientific study down here in the Falklands) and looking back 10's of millions of year the CO2 level does appear to vary quite a lot and that was long before human beings ever appeared on the Earth or started burning fossil fuels. Ice cores taken from Antarctica indicate that CO2 levels have risen and fallen "naturally" down through the ages. I'm sure man is capable of "speeding up " this process but I'm not so convinced that we are solely responsible for what is happening to the climate.
