Martin, Durness IS pretty much a boring one horse town, and younger me wouldn't have been impressed either! Nowadays the idea of solitude and silence is so much more attractive! Beautiful scenery, and no bugger there, my idea of heaven now!

I stopped there at the youth hostel en-route cycling to Cape Wrath* when I was 18 so admittedly the beach wasn't my main objective and I've not been back so maybe I got the wrong impression.

*The Cape Wrath Fellowship was a cycling fraternity back in the day - cycling there carried more kudos than LEJOG as the last 20 odd miles was on dirt roads after crossing in a ferry row boat.

Typically the minute we picked up the motor home it started to rain . The heatwave broke, as we knew it would! As native Scots, however, we were not put off! Having said that, the weather wasn't too bad most of the time, the kids were even in swimming in the sea at Arisaig (although it wisnae warm!!)

Marketed now as the North Coast 500! But I agree, from childhood in Scotland, it was only warm and sunny for a couple of weeks in May or early june each year.

Excellent! I have no idea why we don't go to Scotland more often (both those beach photos were taken in the middle of the afternoon on beautiful hot days - yet the beaches are empty!). Well, actually I was brought up in the Highlands and I don't remember the sun shining very often.... We borrowed the campervan from my parents in Fife, chucked the dogs in, went up the east coast, along the top and down the west coast. We were all (the dogs, my husband and I) very brown, scruffy and covered in sand by the time we returned. Our best holiday in years!

It's Oldshoremore beach, near Kinlochbervie. This is the beach at Durness, pretty much next door to Tongue. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather - it's rarely bikini weather on the north coast, as I remember from my own childhood. Great holiday - swimming in the sea every day, glasses of wine outside in the evenings with our campervan parked on the edge of the beach, watching dolphins.

I was thinking that looked like slightly familiar terrain. I used to go on holiday outside Tongue as a young man, and remember a very similar looking beach. Beautiful.

Hi Edward . It's a while since I attended the last climate change lecture down here but I vaguely recollect that historically (like millions of years ago) CO2 levels in the atmosphere have been as high if not higher than they are now - long before man was doing anything or even existed. I acknowledge what you say about the very quick increase in CO2 levels in the past 120 years and that almost certainly is as a result of human activity but past records indicate that there is also a natural "cycle" in CO2 emissions on our planet. Presumably we can't do a lot about that but I agree that we shouldn't make the situation worse.

Changes of 100ppm CO2 historically have taken 5,000-20,000 years, whereas the recent increase of 100ppm has been in the last 120 years and coincides with the industrial revolution.

I'm not so sure that this is the case. I've attended a few lectures given by climate change scientists from the University of Maine (they are part of a big scientific study down here in the Falklands) and looking back 10's of millions of year the CO2 level does appear to vary quite a lot and that was long before human beings ever appeared on the Earth or started burning fossil fuels. Ice cores taken from Antarctica indicate that CO2 levels have risen and fallen "naturally" down through the ages. I'm sure man is capable of "speeding up " this process but I'm not so convinced that we are solely responsible for what is happening to the climate.
