Using my beesuit damp from the washing machine and ice packs in each pocket!!

Had my BBKA Basic assessment yesterday. 30 degrees, splitting headache and the most debilitating summer cold I can remember.

As do we.

You need the genuine Maple Syrup though, not the sugary syrup served everywhere. It's available in 2 pint containers in the USA and I'm not allowed back in the house after visiting the States unless weighed down with the stuff. Plays havoc with luggage allowances. 20kg for the bike and all my gear, 3kg for the maple syrup. (and worse after the 100ml limit on liquids in hand luggage)

Controversial opinion: I much prefer an American style breakfast of pancakes or french toast with maple syrup (and ideally also bacon and grilled banana) to a full English. I do miss the breakfasts available in every cafe in New Zealand along these lines...

I used to live in Leamington many moons ago and walked up thr biggest hill in the Malverns expecting an energetic hilly romp. Only realised once I'd got there its about 300m and there's a golf course at the top.

FWIW I don't like the Cotswolds or other rolling countryside that much, lack drama. Woods and rivers, yes.

At Mothers last weekend for a family gathering; barbeque and beers outside in the shade of 2 old oak trees, while in the foreground Pedigree Hereford's grazing with calves afoot, and in the distance a great red midsummer sunset over the Clee and Abberley hills. Wonderful.

I do this.... Hitting people is remarkably good for unwinding purposes.

For more sedentary purposes, you can't beat a pot of tea and a good book with no interruptions. In weather like this, preferably outside in the sunshine and surrounded by birdsong. In winter by an open fire.

Our garden is a little oasis of calm on the fringes of London jammed in to the east by the M4, M25 and Heathrow but go west and it quickly gives way to open country, small lanes and villages - not quite Wainwright country or idyllic rural Worcestershire but we barely notice the noise from the motorways, it quickly becomes white noise, and we're not under the flight path so there is little aircraft noise although we can clearly see them taking off and landing. But that may change if runway 3 finally gets built as the present understanding is that once they have taken off they cannot continue to fly into the westerly flight path so planes will have to turn and head east which will take them directly over Iver i.e. us!

Meanwhile Mrs A is an enthusiastic gardener so the garden is always in bloom and the little orchard at the bottom provides a variety of apples, pears and plums - sadly the cherry tree died and has been felled, although there is a flowering cherry on the front lawn, and the fruit cage which provided raspberries and other soft fruit was so derelict we dug it up to make an ornamental garden. The back gate leads to a sports club so in the summer the sound of leather on willow and a gentle 'howsat' floats over the hedge while we can virtually walk straight onto the tennis courts and bowling greens. This close to London doesn't get any better.

Stopping and smelling the flowers.

No I mean that literally. I just love my garden and at this time of year the first thing I do when I get home is walk around my garden, enjoy the changing colours and smell the roses, the honeysuckle, jasmin and philadelphus. If I'm lucky I'll pick some strawberries, raspberries or cherries. And I love nothing more than watching the sun cast ever longer shadows down the valley, until it's gone and leaves only that glorious indigo and orange velvet sky!

Of course, if it's raining then I have little choice but to stay indoors and watch Gardener's World

[/quote]I missed Arlo's post first time round. I've just retired my venerable old petrol mover: the drive and choke cables had been replaced by bicycle brake cables and even the pull handle on the starter cord was bodged from a large plastic wing nut from a Black & Decker Workmate! The thing finally died with presumed carburetor failure and wasn't worth repairing. So I went and bought an electric start, self-drive, petrol Mountfield. Turning a key to start is cool and great not having to tug on a cord with my injured shoulders. I have toyed with the idea of a sit-on mower and although our garden is in theory big enough to justify it there are too many trees, borders and features breaking up the grassed areas to make it practical.

Also have a petrol strimmer and chainsaw - it is quite humbling yet strangely satisfying how easily one can reduce a tree that has taken decades to grow to matchwood in minutes with the latter.

Little things please little minds?
