Get an android based phone. Older versions of the Samsung Galaxy or the Huawei phones are decent, not too expensive and have less crashing issues.

My last phone was a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I only changed it after 3 years because I'd really smashed the screen up and got a good deal on a Galaxy A5.

On a slightly more helpful note for Clive (OP): when I call the QMH and they want to find someone they tell me they'll page them. Presumably they must therefore have some sort of paging system rather than just paging a phone extension so maybe ask them?

A couple of pager companies recently stopped trading/supporting pagers - vodaphone being our previous one so you might struggle to find many other options.

Which Clive?

I was thinking more along the lines of a wireless local area network, or intranet, that does not rely on the mobile telephone network. For example my BB will message or ping other BB users (I think there is a BBM app for smartphones now too), independent of the mobile network - will work as a pager really.

Sorry, I meant Clive Elwood! Your suggestion sounds good to me, but it does rely on everyone having smartphones and carrying them with them all the time, and might cause issues with staff answering private messages and calls while at work (this may be more of an issue for some employers than others).

I think Clive is talking about a stand-alone system for use within a hospital, so it would have its own 'mast' within the building.

That's not my experience, I got a secondhand iPhone 5 for about £200, which I have been very pleased with (I don't need fancy gizmos) and I think you can get new screens fitted much more cheaply than that...

Only just I think.

Blackberry is a great device; reliable, robust, never crashes, and will phone/text/BBM/receive emails, and has a gps map and camera. it does all I need. That said there are many apps out there now not compatible with BB, so maybe I should move with the times and get a smartphone, but iPhones are so stupidly expensive, and my partners seems to be forever freezing or crashing, needs rebooting, and she's just had to have a new screen fitted at £150.

Unfortunately our mobile phone coverage, even with wifi boosters, is patchy onsite and we do not supply mobiles. So there are challenges with that solution.

My first thought, why not use mobile phones as Michael points out which would render pagers obsolete really. Can set different tones for various callers etc. The only downside could be lack or loss of mobile signal, particularly in more remote or hilly areas.

I have a Blackberry and Blackberry messaging (BBM) is reliable and free to use, and will work via local wi-fi or internet if a mobile signal isn't available. I'm sure smartphones or iphones would do similar?

Why reinvent the wheel? Let staff carry mobile phones and text them. Can be done off a computer or peer to peer. Quite easy to set up these days so can only ring from a specific number (all other notifications on silent).
