All the 'servers' we have ever had have been bog standard PC's with UPS protection. The back ups are done to one of the other PC's and a copy held remotely.

No need for expensive hardware. If one breaks you just buy another one!

we use vetIT, the business owner is a good guy. We changed as had ridiculous quotes from robovet to replace server and to enable using the system at home and for additional users. Generally a good experience, printing labels is a problem from remote ie not cable connected computers, can't get it to work. V frustrating.

And set up dual RAID server HDD's and monitor them. And back them up to Evernote each night.

Nine times out of 10 the info wasn't vital and, as someone pointed out on another thread you can always proceed on first principles, as ambos do all the time...

We had a space "box" ready to plug in if a "box" went down and we were therefore able to go in 30 mins or so.

You could buy a spare "box" and load essential the PMS on it for way under the cost of "support".

For small businesses you just need a powerful computer (sub £3-5000) as your server - this comes from my better half, a DBA i.e. spent his entire working life working with databases and servers.

The whole point of cloud-based systems is that you just need a web browser to access, so can use very simple and cheap workstations and don't need to invest in your own server. I'm sure your PMS charges you more for the hardware (it will be made up in the fees you pay somewhere) than buying it yourself...

Our present PMS provider replaces the hardware as it dies so that is not an expense but with the cloud based one we're considering it will become our responsibility.

We're considering vetiT. Anyone else using it?

We use Black Dog as well and get on with it but as every you need to properly demo any system

Take a look at 'The Black Dog' by Richard Badderly, it's very comprehensive and competitively priced, and more importantly reliable and very intuitive.
