Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be along soon. Haven't yet officially launched this, so the map only has people I have invited personally, or via this discussion.

Remember that the system shows referral practitioners in your area, and ONLY those GPs with whom you share a common interest, so the more complete your profile, the more likely you will see others on the map.

Hmm - obviously hadn't anticipated that! It is something we can add in the future, but I guess the biggest problem is what we call you / how we categorise you. 'Not-a-referral-practitioner-but-more-experience-better-qualified-than-most-and-happy-to-see-cases" doesn't really roll off the tongue

And like Rob, I am an Advanced Practitioner in medicine but also a GP vet so none of your categories really fit me either.

Arlo Guthrie, as a general practitioner who will take occasional referrals in dentistry and oral surgery, I don't seem to fit into a membership category. I don't want to call myself a referral practitioner as the majority of my work is GP stuff, but it would be nice to advertise locally that I am happy to see more challenging oral cases....

Yes all three were ones I knew of already. I also know there are some not on there, but presumably that is because they aren’t members here. Yes I do think it would be useful, especially to practitioners who have moved to a new area. I’ve been here for 30 years so know most of the practices in the area. But it is still a useful facility, someone wanting some assistance with a case can see a quick suggestion.

One thing if that occurs to me, if you get vet students registering on here, could you include an option for practices to say they welcome EMS students? As I think small practices aren’t always on the radar but can provide good experience.

Joyce Whitehead that's really helpful, thank you so much.

Your own flag is supposed to appear in the middle of the map, I'll ask the techies why it isn't.

As regards expanding the map area, I've already discussed this with the techies and it looks like v2 will include the option for me to set larger areas for different categories of profile matches. So for example we may expand referral practitioners to be UK-wide, but keep certain other things more localised.

You say you see three referral practitioners in your area. Are they three you knew of before? And imagine as the map fills with other referral practitioners and also GPs with common interests (which you can filter by), are you getting a sense this could be useful? (or not?!)

Various things:

a) to enable, you MUST update your practice / address in account settings (https://www.vetsurgeon.org/user/settings.aspx) if you haven't already, and you MUST press the button marked 'Share Your Location' on the VetSurgeon Connect page.

b) Thereafter we start matching you with other local colleagues with shared goals and interests. Don't expect many matches at this very early stage, because you'll be amongst the first to use it.

c) Referral practitioners are displayed to general practitioners and other referral practitioners regardless of other common interests, and we have a fair few on the system already, so you might start to see local referral practitioners immediately.

Another update ...

After the first referral practitioners started putting their flag on the map, we discovered that when there were two members at the same location, you could only see one of them.

Fixed that now, and the map is coming along nicely!

Hi Mariette, yes, sorry about that, we had discovered another little glitch that seemed to be preventing some people from seeing or updating their membership category, but as you say, fixed now.

I've been contacting all referral practitioners who are members of VS over the last few days and inviting them to come and put their flag on the map in advance of launching the new system.

Also contacting smaller veterinary associations and inviting them to ask their members to display their membership in VetSurgeon Profiles (which will also connect them with other local members using the new system).

A long job because I have individually emailed them all personally by hand, rather than the usual CC'd email. But just about finished now. Ironing out a couple of other minor things, then we'll be ready to go in a week or two, I think.

Meantime, work on the new forum post 'reactions' is already underway.

Arlo there is no drop down list for membership categgory.

i am a veterinary consultant because I am not an employee neither do I own my own practice but i am entirely responsible for my own work.

The data in my account are saved but I cannot edit and save because of this.

I'm not quite sure I understand, because membership categories were set on first registration, so should not require you to do anything now. And I've checked your account and it looks saved to me!

Hmm - OK - good point. We categorise members according to whether you are a small or large animal practitioner; a general practitioner or referral practitioner or industry member (there are other categories). This is used mainly to specify what content different categories can see on the site. So for example, with VetSurgeon Connect, only vets (and colleagues of vets) can see location of other vets with shared interests (not industry members). Categories are also the only way we differentiate between members when we email. So for example if there is a commercial announcement about the launch of a new farm animal product, that may be sent only to those registered as farm animal vets. We don't use any other data for this purpose (gender, interests or any other profile info).

Again, not sure I understand. Your membership category is 'General Practitioner, Small Animal". Isn't that correct?

Also, you select the membership category from a drop down list, which doesn't include 'veterinary consultant', 'veterinary surgeon' or 'practitioner'. You can only select from 'General Practitioner', then 'Small', 'Farm', 'Equine' or 'Mixed', or 'Referral Practitioner, then a type of referral practitioner.

So I don't quite understand where 'veterinary consultant' is coming from! Is it something you are trying to type somewhere, because you can't. Membership categories are displayed on a drop down list.

No it doesn't!

The actual words in the account settings are: "Practice / College / Employer". For the slash, you can substitute the word 'or'. The word 'Practice' does not state your employment status with that practice, just implies that you work there.

In your profile itself, the bit visible to other members of the site, the name of the practice is not labelled anything at all, so again it does not state your employment status.

I hope that reassures you both that you are not lying, and nor could the tax man infer that you are employed simply because the name of a practice appears under your name.

However, if you are worried about that, the simple answer would be to choose the 'enter address manually' option, write 'Self-employed' and enter the town or postcode you are based at (I would recommend anyone using VetSurgeon Connect and who is using a home address, should specify a local town rather than a more specific address from a postcode).

Sorry Arlo but this forces me to lie.

I am officially registered for my tax as "mariette asselbergs" as I am self employed and not a company. However, your website does not recognise that. It forces me to state that |I am employed by Emergency Vetcare in Poole, which is not true, I am a self employed independent consultant to Emergency Vetcare and their contract with me states specifically that there is no "master servant relationship". I particularly do not want to be a member of this forum as "employed by" my place of work, because I can just see that that would give trouble with the tax people who up til now always have accepted my independent self employed status. There must be more people in this position.

OK - corrected my first name. My Practice / Employer / College was blank this time to filled that in manually - I was also asked for an optional postcode which brought up the correct address. Finally I updated by phone number. The Save button had turned to red by this point - pressing it displayed a gree box at top confirming update. Leaving ans returning to Account Settings confirms successful update. In short it worked just fine - many thanks :>)

You should put a quesion mark after 'unemployed', then a capital 'C' on 'click' otherwise it doesn't read well.

I found it worked fine, I even managed to amend my sig line which I haven't been able to do for ages! Just one minor formatting/overlap glitch on the email section/tab:

I use Firefox on windows 8.1 currently.

Worked this time (after internet decided to work again) but like several people above, in the space above the red save box was writing in red saying something in the employer/// etc box was incorrect - I clicked Save anyway and it worked but it would be nice for the red message to disappear once the correct information has been inputted.
