My standard rate is £330 per day plus VAT, based on a 10 hour day (0830 - 1830 or 0900 -1900). Will negotiate a little, but wouldn't go below £300. Half days or Saturday mornings, charge a half rate £165. Don't do 5/16 33.3% or 0.87 of a day.

Whether you could charge more being London, I don't know. Also, unsure if you could command more given you SAM certificate, which would be an asset to most practices.

Don't like to exceed 10 hours and insist on a 1 hour or thereabouts lunchbreak. If a long commute will uplift rates to reflect the extra time and costs involved. If using my own car, which has business use insurance, for home visits etc charge 50p/mile.

I am going to make the move into locuming later this year. Would anyone like to share with me any update on what they charge? I will be working in commuter belt for London area!

I've brought in a more exacting rate this year as I felt that charging a practice the same daily rate regardless of consulting time is unfair.

I now charge £275/day for a 10 hour day to include an hours break. After that it's £30 for each part or additional hour.

It's been very successful. If a practice want to open 0830-1900 then that's £305/day, but it has led to a few offering a later start or an earlier finish. In the case of a case coming in later, although i have always dealt with them, it makes it more equitable and in the past 4 months have enacted this twice.

Obviously one has to be a little flexible and not be a clock watcher, but I base my standard rate on a traditional veterinary day of around 0900 - 1900, usually along the lines of consults --> ops --> gap off --> consults.

Many corporates and JVP practices consult much longer with fewer breaks or gaps, so uplift the rates for them. same for very early starts (0700 in one practice) or late finishes (2200 in one case).

The answer is it depends.

If you want to play the OOH rate game then you can. You get paid more per hour during a weekend day than a night shift, latter typically 15hours but normally not as busy.

But the rate is lower the further you book in advance. So there is a risk the shift is taken, and where you are based I'm not sure how many clinics are around.

You also have to factor in travel and the time this takes.

But yes the rates of 40ph are certainly achievable but there are a lot of variables which may not suit your logistics or financial position.

Out of interest, when you are giving your daily rate what are you calling a day, ie 9-7pm or 9-5pm? etc

I was managing about £40/hr 5 years ago in OOH clinics. I'm sure you can get a lot more nowadays.

I think I am comparable to you.

I charge £250/day in independent practices, £300 in corporates but I tend to avoid them.

I normally work OOH as an independent self employed consultant in an independent practice with very lovely team, charging £250 per day (8.00 - 19.00), and £280 per night (19.00 - 8.00 but usually with a few hours sleep). Bank holidays are paid at 150% of this. The practice pays for CPD for the regulars, but not RCVS etc.

When I work in an unknown practice who want me to fill in at the last minute, I take what they offer which is often 400-500/ busy night, usually more stressful for not knowing the rules, the staff, and where things are etc.

My standard rate is £300 per day plus VAT. although I have held it slightly lower for some of my regular and loyal practices.

Some recent work with JVP practices, I have charged £330; harder work, longer hours, less free time in the day.

I haven't worked in ooh clinics for 10 years, but if I were to do it again I would want a minimum of £450 per night for 14 - 15 hour shifts. I just don't want it though.
