I'd like a 'Acknowledgement' button or something of the sorts.

When someone says something in response to your question and you just want to acknowledge that you have read it. Sometimes you don't have anything to say about it, but want to inform the poster that you read the response.

Arlo - can we have a 'go back and read the OP' button also?!

So many posts try to suggest tests or treatments which have already been provided in the history and cause threads to derail preventing any progress from being made {cf the incontinence thread with suggests of trying incurin or incurin + propalin when it was thoroughly discussed originally!}

What if the incontinent bitch thread just got a one star for a post citing success with drug X. nobody learns whether the treatment didn't work or the tone of the post eg "I've never had drug X fail" just upset the one-starrer.

The one-star posts are probably more important than the 5 star, provided they have a narrative with them!

Absolutely - I would be more than happy to have my name attached to a 'disagree' button click, I'm sure this would be a very fair way of doing it. I mean, who could possibly disagree?

I think it better to have a surplus of buttons. It gives the opportunity for a harrumph, a smile, or appreciation without having to compose a post echoing previous posts. Recently I woukd have appreciated a WTF button but I’m trying to behave better so maybe not

2 ways that you could disagree

For me the 1 star system was ruined by a few anonymous individuals systematically 1 starring everything on a thread. It was also becoming pretty obvious that a few individuals would get a 1 star for sending a bouquet of flowers to the queen on her birthday. However outwardly resilient you are, it has an effect and it isn't positive.

There are posters on here that are strident and write it, but the vast majority use their real names to their absolute credit, and for me if we didn't have disagreement then it would be a very dull place. Discussion from Iain that pseudonyms shouldn't be here, but all of them are polite. If we had a pseudonym that was a pain in the neck that would be a different matter.

So for me the accountability of disagreeing with a post is very important. It emphasises the premise that 'would you say that to your face?' much like road rage is anonymous whilst you wouldn't behave like that on the street.

Me too.

It's coming. I think I agree with Michael Woodhouse about things other than Agree, Disagree, Thank you. But maybe I just need flexibility in the system to add ones in the future should we all feel the need!

I am firmly of the view that there should be a simple 'disagree' option without the need for a detailed explanatory. Sometimes there is simply no need, or there are time limitations. The idea we should only have positive options - 'agree', 'like', 'amused' etc in a forum for adult professionals is wrong. Disagreement is about the point being made, not a personal statement about the person who is being disagreed with.

I am surprised TBH about my strength of feeling on this topic, but no stars, and only the option to 'like' all the time is wearing a little thin!

I like Agree, Laughed and Thank you. I know that's a bit Pollyanna, but we all know that a single negative outweighs any number of positives. 'Disagree and explained below' would be good, but probably ruled out on the KISS principle.

Just a thought, why don't you do a poll if you want a democratic decision? But it's your business, you don't have to!

How about this?

Various thoughts in my mind ...

a) Other sites use emoticons to illustration reactions (smileys). I'm in two minds as to whether words, like this, would be more in keeping on a site for professionals, like this. Also, 'Thank You' is not an easy one to illustrate pictorially.

b) I think 'Thank you' is an important reaction, missing from most other social sites I have seen. Has potential to link into a reward system of some sort. Thank you probably needs to work independently of the rest (ie you can thank for sharing whilst simultaneously laugh). Perhaps only agree/disagree should be mutually exclusive.

c) another graphical interpretation, rather than having words in rounded red boxes would be to have words 'stand alone', with number counts adjacent.

d) If you click one, we might add a single horizontal bar underneath to indicate you have.

e) Mousing over a reaction will pop up a list of people who have reacted.

Disagreement is good, it's the way science is advanced, evidence is formed and good decisions are made. I disagree a lot! I'm not sure what use unexplained negative emotion is though. As far as I'm concerned, having a grown-up discussion involving respectful disagreement is great, but anonymous or (possibly even worse) accountable 'dislikes' without explanation are unhelpful. And people making a statement which can be summarised as 'I'm right, you are an idiot, that's the end of this discussion' is worse than unhelpful.

If that's the case, I'm out. We've had this discussion before and there are perfectly reasonable and acceptable reasons for a pseudonym. I am happy to convey my real name by PM to anyone that wants to know.

Have to say I didn't even notice the star ratings on any of my posts. No doubt I have received a few 1 stars but if someone else 5 stars it, you end up with an average so how do you even tell ? I'm one for disagreeing via verbal explanation, not using one stars. Might use starring for faulty products and customer service. Don't see the point of one stars on here.

It's simply that in the Facebook community everything is lovely isn't it? I 'like' it......yuck

We need a way to express a negative emotion but in a constructive way or if you frankly disagree then write it.

However as we now know Facebook isn't benign is it, with all those likes we are being harvested for all sorts of things as Mr Zuckerberg is finding out as he squirms in front of 'real' people. I far prefer this place where I know Arlo won't come knocking on my door trying to sell me something, or sell me to the highest bidder.

Fine by me but, as often happens to me, if a view is disagreed with but this disagreement, with evidence, is just labelled as "turboing" this contraview is dismissed even if it has merit.

The key is that negative views or dissent must have reasons, which can be judged, and therefore given credence and/or merit, or not, to the dissent.
