Anyway, good luck and kudos for your coming back against the odds makes some other's excuses for not getting out and exercising pretty lame.

I went out for a couple of gentle rides over the weekend, the first real efforts since fracturing my scapulae. I felt OK but several groups I would normally have no problem competing with came past and I let them go. In fact the only other cyclists I overtook were a couple of fat women on a hill. (No fattist, sexist statement intended just the facts).

Thanks Niall. I hope that you are both doing well? I never thought that I would ever be aiming for a top ten in a National champs! Work took up too much time to allow me to overcome my lack of natural ability!

You sound a bit like me: a winter-racer; fit in January and below average in the summer perhaps? We have a traditional ten on New Year's Day which I'd won three times [ 1993/ 1994/1996/1997 not since then]. My mates laugh at me saying it is not a proper race, just a bit of seasonal fun and it doesn't count! They can say what they like as long as I beat them! I managed because I trained like mad over winter as well on my Cat-eye turbo. In summer, I'd be soundly beaten by the same riders!
