I think outgoing / less sensitive people get ahead, suffer less but they probably make more mistakes.

I can be a "woe is me" type when it comes to work but I know deep down that I'm careful, thorough and notice things that others miss.

RE: Safety at Work Why "old boys" need to change their ways
I'm also self critical and very happy to confess my mistakes to others (with the hope they can learn from it), but I do still consider myself good at my job.
This self-reflection thing becomes a practice wide exercise when you look at your [S]trengths,

[W]eaknesses, [O]pportunities and [T]hreats and becomes even more interesting when you do it several years in a row, then add in collective achievements in that time. It can be anonymised if you like or made entirely personal if you're discussing personal development. It's a tool that we find useful for marking practice progress.

RE: Safety at Work Why "old boys" need to change their ways
Being self critical is the path to self improvement and competence.
I don't actually mind this. Being self critical is the path to self improvement and competence. I'm VERY self critical, and rarely do things go completely perfectly, but it's a great learning tool I think.

RE: Safety at Work Why "old boys" need to change their ways
...I asked each in turn if they thought they were good at their jobs, and both said no... I'm not sure how to get them to think they are good at what they do.
I don't think you can, its a state of mind linked to all the 'woe is me' posts we get from depressed individuals who are dissatisfied with their lot. You either have self-confidence or you don't. I know its a very small sample but of my two nurses, both of whom are very good at their jobs and have had the same training and input from me, one would say not just she was good but f***ing good and the other would say no. This is entirely predictable from their characters: first one is bubbly, outgoing, adventurous and self reliant; the other one, even though she helped train the other girl is shy, quiet, neurotic and suffering from self doubt and anxiety.

That must be worth a score from 'one star man'!

RE: Safety at Work Why "old boys" need to change their ways

The accents aren't quite so broad, but we were talking about this over dinner (that's what Yorkshire folk eat in the middle of t'day). Three of us were in the room, all of us Yorkshire born and bred. One a young vet and one a student VN. Both are great at their jobs and good people to work with. I asked each in turn if they thought they were good at their jobs, and both said no.

I told them they were (and I mean it), but I'm not sure how to get them to think they are good at what they do.

It's entertaining when "management" gurus fall out, isn't it? Personally I'm siding with SPJ
