Yes, if the animal has it's rabies vaccine and serology done in the EU it can come back without waiting. BUT the serology has to be 30 days after vaccination which is longer than we were waiting previously when they all had serology.

A blood test is required if the pet travels to a non-listed country.

Therefore a dog travelling to the UK that has travelled to Morocco needs serology and time. Not sure how Spanish vets deal with pets that have travelled to Morocco but it is a high rabies risk country and as I remember was where one of the most recent European rabies cases came from.

Edit: you don't need to wait if the vaccination and blood test was done in the EU.

Further question if a dog leaves the EU for a unlisted country eg Morocco. Comes back to Spain. How long do they have to wait before re-entering the UK ? Also do they need rabies serology. Not clear to me. I thought 3 months and serology but Spanish vets disagree.

[/quote]I did think it may be the case as the boxes are not big enough for the OV stamp and overseas vets don't have a government stamp just the practice one.

I did have one client who wasn't happy when I issued the passport that I didn't stamp the rabies vaccination box with the OV stamp after I'd already stamped the box with it in section IV page 7 and only filled my details in by hand so I directed her towards the guidelines. However there didn't seem to be any clear guidelines on whether the OV stamp was necessary on renewal or if the practice stamp, or even just handwriting with the OV number inserted, would do. Thanks for clearing that up.

no mention of anyone filling out passport apart from OV or veterinarian except sections 1-3:

"Sections I-III: can be completed by practice support staff or veterinarian.The owner may affix the photograph in Section II.
Section IV: is to be completed by an OV.
Section V: if required, must be completed by an OV.
Section VII: can be completed by a practice veterinarian.
Section VIII: can be completed by a practice veterinarian.
Section IX: can be completed by a practice veterinarian.
Section X: must be completed by an OV.
Section XI and Section XII: see below for further details."

At the OV conference in September this point came up. The answer depends on whether the animal has the old style or new style passport.

If it is old style ( you can tell this as only the vaccination date and valid until date are asked for) then use the OV stamp as you used to.

If new style (asks for vaccination date, valid from date, and valid until date ) then use the practice stamp and write your stamp number as well when you sign it.

[/quote]As already said practice stamp and I don't see why a VN can't sign it with the authority of the VS, it is not a legal document only a convenient way to keep the records in one place no different than a normal vaccine record. How would anyone know it wasn't a VS's signature anyway? - in the unlikely event anyone did challenge it, so long as everyone is singing from the same song sheet in the practice then I cant see a problem.

However, Richard raised a valid point: should we stamp the Rabies vaccine on renewal with the OV or the practice stamp? At present I do the former as although any VS can give the rabies vaccine surely only an OV can update the passport. I don't think DEFRA/APHA thought this one through very clearly.

new passport style - practice stamp. Only place OV stamp is on issuing page. No idea about legality of nurses filling in an official EU document - doubt it if it says veterinarian but as a vet you can sign if you are happy all conditions documented are truthful and correctly done
