Rob - "I do think they just wanted to get the OV training costs off their books, but there's always unintended consequences". MAFF/DEFRA/APHA didn't have the cost of training factored in at all. It was one of the real shortcomings of the whole LVI/OV system.

Clare - possibly moving to non vet cert, except vet cert is defined by OIE and WTO and RCVS is the recognised authority. So it's within our control.

FMD Bob? Not a chance there'll be enough vets plus the AI last year left me in no doubt that APHA would not be able to cope.

The unintended consequence is there will be far fewer vets willing to do DEFRA work. Smaller pool of expertise at their disposal in times of crisis.

Almost nobody to deal with Foot & Mouth next time round.

Lots of paperwork showing compliance for this and that will not be of any value to the vast majority of vets already working to a high standard. It is not viable financially for many to maintain their panels considering the limited income generated.

Their choice, their responsibility when it goes pear shaped.

All my OV panels will be allowed to lapse except possibly the PETS passport one.

I've just had a look at the Improve OV website with some dismay. i hadn't realised the revalidation would be so onerous or so expensive - I'm grandfathered onto 5 panels, but do about 12 passports a year and 2-3 export certificates a year.

I'm appalled at the requirement to have another MRCVS supervise any online exam - it seems so unnecessary as mistakes made on certification have consequences therefore you need to do your job properly, just like everything else we do!

And the logged CPD, and reflections on paperwork done, as well as reflections on advice given regarding paperwork that then was not undertaken - it seems ridiculously over the top to say the least. If i don't have to perform like that to maintain my MRCVS status, I'm b*ggered if I will do it to maintain OV status!

I have absolutely no intention of putting myself to so much trouble or expense, and will find it a relief to no longer have to get involved in issuing the damn things

At most ports, pet checks are delegated to the carrier (ferry/tunnel company), who have no particular interest in applying the rules, more offering the cheapest cost of taking pets to attract travellers (leaving little money to pay staff to enforce things)

One had a passport that had expired and went out/in the country on three occasions before I pointed out to her it had expired. She was a nice posh lady travelling to Switzerland so it hardly mattered but that's not the point.

Presumably you follow the signs for people travelling with pets, if you chose to just drive through without declaring you had a pet then how would they know anyway?!

Still plenty of rescue dogs appearing with standard PETS passports. A van of import dogs should automatically trigger even the lightest brain that these are not pets.

Mislaid the details but there is no requirement for separate essential skills etc as it is 'included' in the module. There is no requirement to attend a course but the 'exam' needs to be taken in the presence of another MRCVS or other acceptable person.

Not sure I will bother. If enough people are thinking the same way I am then there may be a problem!

I have to say that hasn't been my experience. We've taken our dog to Europe every year for the last 10 years, using Calais, Cherbourg and Caen ports and various vets all over France, and the process has always been taken seriously and the paperwork checked and completed properly.

Fair point David. It was a tender, possibly because Government wanted one point that they could oversee. It would be worth finding out if this is occurring, and looking to encourage competition.

To pick up the 325% increase in certification, this is only if we have to work on WTO rules. I trust RCVS are pushing all the buttons for vet to be an unrestricted occupation post Brexit.

Four of us in the practice are due to revalidate our SS panel. With it costing around £120 each and having to provide 5 case studies each, I can't see it happening - we probably do a handful of anthrax/brucellosis enquiries a year between us.

[/quote]Basically yes! At the rate of £250-300 a day for a locum for me to do the CPD, the CPD fees and fee for the revalidation it is just not worth me bothering for a dozen passports a year so I will probably cease to be an OV in May next year. Can't say I'll miss it.

That's right, because only an MRCVS will be able to ensure you're not sneaking a look at your notes during the exam! :p
