Funny that. Sounds like my first job and first boss, back in 1986 !! Probably happens to every generation. Difference being that there were far fewer vets and fewer jobs when I was a new grad so we tended to put up with long hours and poor renumeration. Plus we did a lot more interesting surgeries and weren't just vacc/desexing clinics. Most of us vets in Australia (and NZ) did the sabbatical to the UK after 1-2 years out, then came back to, hopefully, a long-term position. Don't think so many Aussie vets do this these days.

I think Millenials are much less inclined to put up with poor conditions so move on fairly quickly. Even with the increased vet numbers (in UK/USA and Australia), there always seems to be many jobs advertised so they have more choice (albeit most of the jobs being with a corporate entity !).

RE: The Millennial Problem - clarified

I have seen a change in the way practices treat new grads - I was nurtured and looked after (and so was happy to graft and return the efforts of my colleagues), now a lot of practices see new grads as a renewable resource. Well done grandad but I would rather not do that just because you had to!

And not being able to form true relationships because of facebook, sorry but what a load of crap. This is a western society problem not generational, eastern europeans are far more social and friendships are far more important in one's life and there is facebook over there as well.

If this generations wants a specific working pattern then they should try everything possible to achieve it, they have another 20-30 years to spend in it.
Those who moan most about work ethic in youngsters are probably those whose practices are so busy and understaffed that everyone is overworked and stressed out. Its just millenials/gen x have the self confidence to tell the dinosaurs where to get off if they don't like it.

RE: The Millennial Problem - clarified

I don't know about this, bit of a generalisation! We had snow ++ the other day and of the 3 staff that managed to struggle in (out of 7), it was your so-called Millennials! One even offered to come in early as the nurse on early shift couldn't get in.

We all know it's not a 9-5 job, but yes, people have realised they want a work-life balance (not a dirty phrase!) Is it too much for us to be a little enlightened and move with the times? Yes, emergencies happen, and IME not a single member of staff huffs about those genuine emergencies. It's the ongoing always overrunning due to poor organisation/ trying to cram too many appointments into too few slots that grinds people down.

I'm not a millennial (I am an old gimmer!) I work hard, run my own practice. But I still want to finish at 6pm unless there is a genuine reason to stay. I still want to spend time with my family at weekends, have other hobbies, and I'm fine with my staff wanting the same.

Work ethic is, I think, something taught. I would like to think my own children have a good work ethic (I make them do chores to earn pocket money, which apparently is "Victorian"), but I wouldn't like to see that being taken advantage of when they reach the workplace. It's no bad thing that the younger generation are starting to realise they don't need to be worked to death. Just because we put up with it doesn't mean young vets should continue to!

RE: The Millennial Problem - clarified
Maybe their reluctance to work long hours/OOH is because they take it all so seriously?
Maybe, or maybe they just have not been brought up on/exposed to the long hours and OOH work with the proliferation of emergency centres this century ! I've heard colleagues recently commenting about quite a few new grads they've employed as being "lazy".

Years ago, a new grad we employed (mid-90s so Gen X, not even a Millenial) categorically stated she would only work 38 hours/week, no weekend work or after hours !! I laughed at that - she did end up doing weekend work and some after hours or NO JOB. These were the days before any A/H emergency centres !! Also the days before a Veterinary Surgeons Award which outlined exactly the conditions of employment.

I have no qualms about employees being paid a decent wage, or overtime for extra hours, but they just can't expect to take off at 6pm to go to the gym when there is still work to be done ! Doesn't work in vet or hospital settings !
