I have a query about my daughters Border Terrier. The bitch was mated 26 days ago and now is very quiet and totally off her food. She normally gets Royal Canin. Might it be OK to try with something

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Just to let you know she is eating well now. I felt one pup on palpation as did my daughters 2 vets

Just a case of waiting now. Thank you all for your valuable input

Might be worth picking up a digital thermometer from a chemist...could be handy in a month too!!!

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Hello Colleagues. Sincere thanks for all your input. Update is that the bitch loves tuna and scrambled egg which she has eaten well today. No vaginal discharged etc

I will go to see her tomorrow and palpate her abdomen. We have no thermometer to take he temp but my daughter sent me a video of bitch eating well but leaving her biscuits!

Again sincere thanks to you all.

Happy New Year from Derek

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

This is interesting , Derek , I base my advice on the following

‘totally off food’ and ‘very quiet‘ worries me a bit more than just reduced appetite and if this is more than a day and your daughter has waited a day or two but is worried enough to seek your advice and she knows her own dog then that concerns me . I would find out just how long she has been inappetant and quiet, if just this morning then 24 hours is fine, if it’s been all weekend then that’s different.

The other problem with a relative’s dogs is that you can bet it’s now your responsibility once you give your advice. Plus it will likely cost more if she eventually has to be seen in the night tonight.

i think peace of mind is important for owners so I was always an “ if you’re worried let’s see it vet “ but then the costs for a consult on New Year’s Day is probably much more than it used to be. more info would be helpful but ultimately there is no right or wrong answer . Good luck

sorry about the duplicate post Arlo , can u delete

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Is your daughter able to take the dog's temperature? As long as that's normal then temp with nice food and see how the dog is tomorrow.

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

I would give her 24 hours. Just because she was mated it doesn't mean this illness is pregnancy related. She can also have GI problems or other things, would certainly do an abdominal ultrasound tomorrow if she isn't improving.

Get her scanned immediately if drinking excessively or you see vaginal discharge.

And yes some bitches can have morning sickness :)

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Hello Derek. It is absolutely fine to give her some other food to try such as white fish, chicken etc. As far as I am aware, they don't get nausea like we do but they can certainly have 'off' days. If she also refuses the 'treat' type foods I'd be a bit more worried, and would get her checked for a pyometritis or other coincidental illness. If she is otherwise bright and non-painful it should be fine to leave it until tomorrow though.

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Hi Derek

how long has she been off her food ? If she was mine I would have her checked out by a vet , could be something and nothing but could be an infection such as metritis. Better to know what you are dealing with , hope all is well.

RE: Possibly pregnant bitch not eating

Hi Derek

yes ok to tempt her with fish , eggs, chicken and rice etc. Check her mucous membranes are pink, check she's not jaundiced, check her temp., no abnormal vulval discharge ( a little clear mucus is not usually cause for alarm) ...... ie. is there anything obviously wrong with her. Her current event of anorexia may or may not be related to her pregnancy. If she's not perking up within 24 hours i would get her seen by the local vet a) to establish that she is actually pregnant and b) to check for underlying illness.

I've known bitches to have a reduced appetite in the latter stages of pregnancy and to have the odd off day... but at just 26 days into a pregnancy she should be behaving and eating as normal.

Hope she's ok soon.
