Get sensible people to discuss things in a grown up way. It really is a question of maths and logistics all of which are worked out worldwide for trade already.

I am not suggesting anyone should be giving any country what they want. Just decide what works and is in the interests of as many countries as possible.

To be quite honest I believe it should be left to the civil servants to work it out then hand it over to the politicians.

Yes I do believe that the EU negotiating team is doing its best to antagonise and aggravate the process because the UK must be seen to have been punished for its temerity to decide to leave.

Sadly the weakness of the government and the horrific possibilities should we get a near Marxist government is making things worse.

I have little doubt that unless a reasonable agreement is reached then a future strong government might decide to change the agreement and we will be back in a war of words a la Trump! Remainers and Brexiteers will only go away with a good agreement all round.

The UK has always sat a bit uncomfortably within the EU and may end up being a better partner with a bit of separation and distance from the EU.

I have to say I am so bored with the EU posturing and threats of Armageddon. The UK posturing is more aimed at the warring factions within the government.

EU nationals would be given settled status. EU politicians just kept demanding more and more, often nit picking changes.

This could and should have been sorted out when Ms May made the offer in the first place.

I still fail to see why EU citizens should have been expected to have greater rights than a British citizen nor be subject to European law in the long term.

Other than the insecurity that was inevitable because of the EU stance there was almost no chance for a different outcome.

I will be impressed by an online form that takes minutes to fill in. Never seen anything that brief from the Home Office except a rejection letter!

With discussion and sensible conversation most of the agreements could happen over a weekend. That just does not suit the EU way of doing things.

It has been made perfectly clear that the intention is to allow those from the EU to remain in the UK with minimal fuss (not sure the government are that good at minimal fuss though!).

The present settlement rules are quite draconian because they were never designed for EU nationals. With a little good will this could have been resolved many months ago. The constant negative barrage of boorish comments from EU politicians and leaders plus the reluctance of the UK side to give their bargaining position away has blocked any decisions.

The most stupid thing is we all know that an agreement will happen, finalised on the last day. That is just how they work!

A decision is not stupid just because you don't like the result! It may or may not be stupid in the long run but the idea of an integrated States of Europe certainly would not work for the UK so one way or another I suspect the UK would have left if the Macron and Juncker models came into play.

The only way to secure your access to services & rights in the UK as an EEA, is by obtaining a UK passport If your country of origin allows double citizenship or you are happy losing the passport of your country if origin. And the only route to get a passport if you're an EEA, is by getting a Permanent Residency document first. However, the PR document might lose all its value after Brexit as it is an EU directive.

In the event of a deal, your rights should be secured for some time (undetermined), as the UK government is planning a 'settled status' which is not yet completed and it separates you from other UK citizens. It is expected to be easier to apply for 'settled status' if you have a PR card, but the necessary documentation for this is still pending from the EU/UK negotiations (nothing is agreed until everything is agreed) and the UK government requirements.

Under the 'settled status' proposal you'd be allowed to remain in the country for as long as you want unless UK courts unilaterally change your rights (as this status doesn't confer you rights to vote in GE but it subjects you to UK law) or you leave the country for a period longer than 2 years.

So in your case i don't think you can count on any residence or work permit rights at all since you never completed the first 5 years and may have been absent anyway for 2 years. As it is so difficult to get vets, it may be a bit easier at the moment to be allowed to work, but don't count on it, the home office is not a bunch of reasonable people. Employers are made to check on employees right to work, and are liable to get high fines if they employ somebody without the proper rights. MRCVS or NI number don't help at all unfortunately.

Anyone know how the silly Brexit will affect foreign vets working in the UK ?

In my case I am from Norway, worked 4 years in different surgeries befor going back to Norway. But now I am taking a sabbatical from clinical work to travel and meditate and such.
I always figured that I could go back to do a few months of locuming here and there while waiting for the right permanent job in Norway...but don`t know how it will be in the future.
I am a member of the royal college, and I have a UK national insurance card, registered with the NHS and the Tax-man.

Also anyone form an EU country will be free to come and go regardless right up to the point we actually leave the EU and anyone becoming resident up to that point will have the same rights.
