I had a discussion with my nurses about this last year. We decided that we would start the next "fashionable" essential supplement. We decided on the Sharon Fruit, just because it's somewhat underused, seems a bit exotic, pretty colour. We reckoned we could start a blog/ facebook page about the miraculous properties of the Sharon fruit, share it a few times, claim it "might" cure everything from baldness to arthritis to depression, have a few people endorse it, buy shares in Sharon fruit and sit back and become millionaires!

Thanks Steve - so a bit like trophy hunting funding conservation projects, one of the many contradictions in ecology. The rat eradication is an excellent piece of work on SG.

Hi Iain. But in the case of South Georgia the money which they can make from issuing licence fees for the fishing of krill can be ploughed back into environmental work both on land and in the marine environment surrounding SG. They've just spent £7M in eradicating rats from SG - the largest landmass from which rats have ever been eradicated. We've got 3 rat detector dogs coming from NZ in 2 weeks' time to head down to SG to see if they can find any signs of any rat activity.

There may well be clinical applications. That's different to something being an essential part of a normal diet. I've yet to see the krill feeding activity by domestic dogs sequence on Blue Planet 2.

[/quote]Asides from being important for the normal functioning of the body, there is considerable evidence that Omega 3 and 6 supplementation is very beneficial for a number of conditions including cardiac disease, renal disease and joint disease. There was a good lecture on this again at SAMSoc and krill oil, apart from from being a very good source of these EFAs, being lower down the food chain also contains less, if any, heavy metals such as mercury which are a potential health hazard from other marine based EFA supplements such as green lipped muscle. Vegetable sources do not contain the right balance of EPA and DHA and would have to be taken in impossibly prodigious amounts to give the same benefit and are thus effectively useless. So in fact there are good reasons for this product to exist.

Passenger pigeon pie anyone? Sorry Steve, that's not mean to be that flippant and I too have read into the Krill source and yes it is potentially sustainable. Of course there's no real reason that this product needs to exist at all, except for exploiting human stupidity for a profit.

And these are the reasons I use it - personally!, + the fact that it has much better, and higher levels of, glucosamine and chondrotin than human products. I can confidently report that my joints have been totally pain free since I started.

But why do we need to exploit this food source that is the very building block of marine life, just to use a dubious property that's fashionable at the moment . I didn't realise that Synoquin had krill in it, hopefully Yumove doesn't.

points out that 60-70% are gone, so how can any fishing be sustainable? The recent issues with penguins in Antarctica and subsequent refusal by 2 countries to protect with a marine sanctuary shows that commercial interests are doing us great harm and I put Dr Krill firmly in that boat

At certain times of the year and with very high tides we sometimes get krill deposited on our beaches down here in the Falklands. The beaches take on a pink colouration and look very pretty but after about a week the bad smell sets in.

Talking of which, did anyone see Trude Mostue at LVS, she was selling her own brand of Omega 3 supplement.

IMHO she was the most inept, embarrassing, vet I've ever seen on the box.

And Shaun Opperman was easily the best, although Noel has an unique opportunity to educate and convince the pet-owning public on any pet-based subject under the sun.

Oh I saw the Krill stand. Ignored it completely as it seemed pointless. Synoquin EFA uses krill oil and we use that.

I was intruigued at LVS by the number of stalls peddling, what I believe is accurately known as: "Utter Crap".
