Andy Torrance. The title of the talk was 'Lymphoma in companion animals - the diagnostic and prognostic revolution'

It was an hour of very wordy slides, huge amount of detail about the subtyping of lymphomas and the different stains available, and entirely on cytology. No information on much above the cellular level, not talking about treatments or general approaches to lymphoma.

Probably my fault for not picking up it was a cytologist talking, but really didn't enjoy it.

I found the lectures better than BSAVA congress, which I feel are more aimed at new grads, but some things were a little basic for me (but that may be due to just finishing a cert).

No, an ACTH stim test would have to be done first. The argument for not using dex was very persuasive.

[quote user="Anthony Dennison"]Addisonian dogs need very little pred, and Zycortal does have some glucocorticoid action.[/quote]There was a talk on this at SAMSoc as well, it seems that the recommendations from Dechra lead to far too much glucocorticoid supplementation and it can be pretty minimal but I wouldn't generalise that this is the case in all. Monitor using ACTH levels as well a Na:K.

So, anyone find any useful information from LVS?

For me, the list was:

C- Reactive Protein can be useful but not as a one off, for measuring trends to determine when to finish treatment

Don't use dexamethasone in dogs in an Addisonian crisis, as it has no mineralocorticoid activity at all and there is likely to be some GI pathology going on. Instead, use hydrocortisone (sodium succinate or sulphate, I can't remember which one!) as a low dose CRI.

Addisonian dogs need very little pred, and Zycortal does have some glucocorticoid action.

David Church was an excellent speaker, really enjoyed. The Lymphoma talk on Friday afternoon was DIRE though.

Anyway, I'm teetotal at the moment due recently diagnosed AF (mentioned on another thread). My malt whisky and Belgian beer collection is a terrible temptation!

[/quote]Absolutely agree, he nearly always has something new and we have a good laugh together in a sort of 'oh no, its you again' sort of way - he is always happy to field 'thought provoking' questions.

[/quote]If you're really stuck for somewhere to stay you are welcome to use the flat above my surgery (not exactly salubrious but comfy enough), West Drayton station is a 5-10 minute walk and its 20 minutes to Paddington with the tube from there on.

Not so much new Michael, but a different way of looking at fasciolosis to create a longer term solution. I know there's a lot of work on vaccines, but that's a level of science I can't talk on!

Is the small animal stream ok? The farm stuff always seems to be pitched at a very basic level (anything new in fluke Iain Richards other than copra-antigen that I won't have picked up otherwise )?

I'd like to make the effort but they need to do more to tempt me.....
