Then you need a trustworthy editor.

I wrote a few things for it rather a large number of years ago. I ceased to do so when I sent them an article about equine dentistry, very carefully composed to the exact number of words they requested, and they (i.e. the sub-editors) did two things:

– altered all the paragraph breaks to make equal-size paragraphs, even though so doing destroyed the sense;

– in an absolute master stroke, worthy of the Lord Chancellor in Iolanthe, altered two words and in so doing completely reversed the thrust of what I was saying.

While we are having a good grumble, has anyone else noticed the sudden drop in standard of the Veterinary Record since the Editor changed?

Just read it - as you say all the stones are in the descending colon. It then says "the x-ray helped us locate the pebbles and we were able to retrieve them without the need for surgery." In other words they gave an enema!

Apologies but it definitely changed hands recently hence the CVS practice newsleaks, I remember one involving a masterly guru like CSF tap followed by some pred , a fanfare and dancing crowds of joyous clients and an OBE for the fresh faced smiley ponytail bearer with airbrushed hair and teeth. The deliriously grateful client in photo opp etc

Means I have no control over what gets published even if it has my name on it![/quote]While they are normally very good, I have had this problem as well and just a couple of subtle changes have effectively altered the tense of some sections and can make the author look like an idiot (OK I'll say it before anyone else, that in my case that may be true)!

I complained on a couple of times and was effectively told to like it or lump it.

This is standard in my experience, having had multiple articles published on ............. cycling. (fabulous pictures and article in Cycle (Lofoten Islands) will hit 50.000 doormats in the next few weeks)

Quite a bit of fuss has been made in the USA recently where actors were insisting on proof reading their copy.

You need to trust the editor

I didn't know that.

I also find it very strange that authors are not allowed to proof-read the articles before they are published and Vet Times journalists are allowed to modify the content. Means I have no control over what gets published even if it has my name on it!

Oh. Well, I wouldn't worry, nobody reads it anyway. I open it solely for the loony letters, but those are poor these days and sometimes don't appear at all.

And the cringeworthy headlines - they must have an extremely overstaffed 'department for crummy puns'. What was it this week - something about a hedgehog getting into a 'prickly' situation and someone starting a 'hedge' fund for it - give me strength!

Why frustrated? It's just a free rag, an advertising vehicle. They've got to fill those pages every week, so they publish any old press release they get.

Sadly there appears to be a general dumbing down of the journal and its getting more like The Daily Mail every week. Unfortunately it seems as though the editing team don't realise that its not the tabloid reading general public who are the audience but the profession which wants serious content with the odd amusing anecdote not: 'Vet performs routine operation' or 'Vet gets new bit of equipment'. It is ironic that they have pointedly made a move in the last few years to reject articles submitted by general practitioners towards papers commanded from specialists.

Things have gone downhill since they stopped asking me for articles to publish every other week!!
