I've also been asked, as an upstanding member of society*, to countersign Irish passport applications by strangers and I just have to say that the person is a good likeness to the photograph, I don't have to say I know them. Presumably different countries have different values. I ask them for £20 for a charity box.

* OK I know, no snide remarks necessary!

RE: Human passports

It is quite difficult to find people that qualify and know someone long enough to fit the rules.

Can be more difficult for children as teachers may not have known them long enough. Particularly if families move around.

Actually nice to hear that counter signatories are being audited. A passport is just that, a passport to a lot of freedoms!

RE: Human passports
She had to confirm that she knew the person on headed paper having been asked by the passport office. Presumably this is the ultimate recognition that a vet is OK to do this, but also shows caution if you don't really know them

Other registered professionals can sign even if not on the list.

The medical fraternity requested removal from the list because too many people tried to use them to countersign. A lot of GP's no longer recognise their patients anyway!

Nothing to stop a registered veterinary nurse doing the same thing. Our head nurse has done just this.

RE: Human passports

Many thanks for replies.

RE: Human passports

My old boss signed mine and I had no problems, so I think we can

RE: Human passports
we're not on the example list on the govt website....

I have countersigned several passport applications and all the passports have been issued. Looking at the government website it says "work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession" or be "a person of good standing in their community". It then gives a list, which as you say doesn't include vets, but as it says it is a list of examples, not a comprehensive list, I think that we can sign them.
