I know there are lots of dependent factors but I wondered if anyone could help give me a ballpark reasonable salary for a 4 year qualified vet working a 4 and a half day week, 1 in 4 weekend Rota (covering from Saturday morning to Monday lunchtime

RE: Appropriate salary
I'm not sure if I explained that very well.
Not from me - I agree. I have worked in 3 different jobs in the last 17 years. All have been somewhere between 1 in 2 and 1 in 4 OOH rota and all have had a half day off per week, no extra after the weekend on call. It's what I expected from the profession when I started.

RE: Appropriate salary

In response to offering jobs with full time hours then tacking OOH and weeeknds on top (wouldn't let me quote properly):

Call me old-fashioned but full time hours always used to include the OOH and weekends i.e. as a vet it was expected that your full hours included full time days (probably the odd afternoon off!) and OOH duties and weekends. You wouldn't get time off in lieu, because those were the expected hours.

Maybe this change in expectations of what working hours the job entails doesn't help as people now feel dissatisfied if they don't have a 4 day working week. It never used to be the norm, nor did time off in lieu of working on call-just part of the job!

Very helpful to get a bit of a idea.

I'd like you think I'm pretty competent! Happy to have a go at most things and if the situation arose then would feel wholly comfortable with a sole charge role (although still nice to have a phone-a- friend option occasionally!!)

In terms of the comment about PM systems being able to show what I've billed, that is true but the function is locked so only the practice manager / boss can run those reports at current place.

Also SPVSs do indeed have a salary survey but you have to be a member to access it and I'm not!

Why not? Most PMS have a suite of business reports and if you work for a practice associated with one of the Practice Management Groups, e.g. Platinum Practices, then they'll have it all benchmarked as well.

As Gillian said, i have no idea about turnover or profit generated (not even for my current role - maybe i should ask?!)

Sorry for not providing enough info.

Full weekdays average 10 hours per day (and from what I understand are quite busy so not much chance for extended time away from the practice except for lunch). Half days are 4 hours. For working the weekend you get an extra day off the next week. Weekends, the practice is open for normal appointments on Saturday, emergencies and tending to in patients only on Sunday. So I'm not sure exactly what the hours are - I guess it depends how busy on call is and how many in patients there are.

For weekday on call you work a full day either side of the night you're on call. The half day off per week is considered TOIL for the night duty. Not sure how busy the OOHs tend to be.

Hope that covers most aspects but let me know if I forgot anything!!

Thanks again

RE: Appropriate salary

When looking for a job in the north Kent area (i.e. London commuter territory) recently I had offers ranging from £34 - £47k (I'm also 4 years qualified).

RE: Appropriate salary
What turnover do you think you will generate, or rather what are your new employers expecting you to generate?
The problem is that in many (most?) practices, employees never get access to this data so don't know where to start the discussion. Certainly, when I was an assistant I had no idea what mine or the practice's turnover was. To be honest, turnover is irrelevant anyway...it is profit that matters. (We can all increase our turnover by selling the most expensive antibiotic!) Employers rarely share their profit info with employees....

As has been said, more information is needed such as weekly hours etc...???

RE: Appropriate salary
