I have an experienced RVN friend who is starting out locumming and is unsure what to charge. What's the range roughly?

Yuh, I am stating the obvious - the 'going rate' depends on location (London clearly commands more than, say North West or NI); also depends on Qualifications/Experience (more Quals/ experience, usually can ask for more per hour if using relevant skills); also depends on negotiations (emergency cover might command higher rate than a long-term stint where RVN is happy to take a lower rate as he/she has a guaranteed income for an extended period); if travel/accommodation costs provided by the practice should mean locum can re-jig their rate accordingly; distance to travel might increase rate... and so on.

All this said, generally - as previously stated iro £12-£18 per hour with the exceptions being OOH or referral work (usually higher p/hr / day). Some RVN's love charity working and will reduce rates to meet charity expectations for the thrill of working with them. If agency-tied then depends how the agency charges the client - if set fee, RVN has freedom to charge as much or as little as practice will agree to; however if agency has a set hourly rate then generally the agency want to restrict the RVN's hourly rate to a maximum ceiling as if it increases above that it affects their profit margin...

I know you VS peeps must understand all this... just info for any nurses out there that possibly mightn't....!!!! Peace.

I have a bank of info prepared especially for first-time RVN locums - if any one wants copies, let me know (PM me with your email) - covers things such as setting up Ltd Co, benefits, must-have's (eg. VDS C&D insurance cover), Umbrella Companies, Agencies, template invoice and contract... and so on.

Regards and happiness.
