Depends if the employer gave me the tools to do that with a pricing structure and clientele.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I treat everyone the same. If an animal needs a mass removed I will recommend it, if it doesn't I won't. Ultimately my ATV is dictated by the codes on the computer

Thank you for all your help so far.

The practice is in Scotland on the outskirts of a small (50k) city. The average zoopla houseprice is 178k, we are paying £575 pcm for a small 2 bedroom flat.

Alastair, 20% for on call and then per rata is what I was thinking as well. Our pay was calculated at 21.50per hour as well, and I was told this includes the allowance for doing on call. The actual pay is higher at 35k so I am not sure how this has been worked out. Our full time hours are only about 28 a week so this seems very fair. I am happy with the salary as it is, I just wanted to get an idea what value to put on the on call to be prepared for the negotiation process. I don't want to have unrealistic expectations but on the other hand don't want to sell myself too cheap either. It is not yet clear if not doing on call will even be possible but that is a different topic.

I am not sure sure how OOH can be interpreted in different ways. I understand OOH as "on call"/in patient checks in addition to agreed working hours, so basically all times outside regular opening hours. If the practice is open at the weekend and I am scheduled to work 8-12 on a Saturday (or Sunday) morning it is not OOH, but part of my weekly hours.

RE: Part-time salary

I think that it is hard without knowing more detail but contributing to the OOH workload should carry a significant premium and conversely dropping it should come with a significant penalty.

As a ball park I would guess a loss of ~20-25% of salary (dependent on what you are counting as OOH) and then a pro rata reduction based on your previous hours down to 20 (so 50% if you were on a 40 hour week). It's likely to be quite a hefty reduction but (unless there is some innovative way of covering the OOH you were previously doing that we don't know about) either the remainning 2 vets doing OOH have just had a 50% increase in their nights on call or someone else has been hired at extra cost.

RE: Part-time salary

When I was the employer, my full time small animal vets (all approx 10 years qualified) were on around 50k for a 3 ½ to 4 day week (8.30 to 7) plus 2 in 5 Saturday mornings. They all had their own car and houses but we paid RCVS and one professional subscription.

However, looking back, Ian and I probably 'paid' for that by taking a reduced income ourselves and working long hours rather than pay locums. However, we did have good staff retention which is paramount when trying to build and maintain a practice. You take your choice....

RE: Part-time salary
28 hours is 2/3 full time hours.... so why would £32k be generous ...unless youre paying your experienced full time vets less than 40k??
No nights and I thought a lot of these small animal practices did very long days (to make up for no OOH )? I suppose it depends on benefits etc because car, CPD, memberships etc can add 20+% to the value of a salary package. Remember the average salary for all employed vets is around that figure for all vets......

We took the salary and broke it into 6 parts, 1 for each weekday and 1 part for equal share of Sat AM and nights. Split days so we work 8.30-6.00 and AM half is 8.30-14.00 and PM is 13.00-18.00.

Working 50% of the time would get you 50% of your salary (and 50% of your benefits). With us OOH is not negotiable, so our part time vet did 1 full day, 2 half days and OOH.
