This is what I am thinking of, tell me whether you think the idea is a goodun, or a duff one:

Now that's an interesting thought, to show/connect regional members of the various associations.
Perhaps you might contact them and offer them what they would like but haven't got
Indeed. I will. Thanks.

RE: Connections in the profession

BVA and BSAVA (BEVA and all the other BVA affiliated societies?) have always had Regional setups, but are seeing attendance at meetings decline and although they kind of know some kind of social network would be to their Membership's advantage they have had neither the interest, nor I suspect funding to push things on.

I hadn't thought of that (I'd only got as far as thinking a good way to see at a glance which referral practitioners are in your area, not about the way it could perhaps encourage referrals to a wider cross section of referral practitioners).

No comment as regards the other possible applications.

Perhaps seeing people in the same year at uni who are nearby is of limited use, and I'm trying to imagine whether it would be useful to see others in the area interested in a particular clinical areas (perhaps interesting if they are niche areas, but I guess the fact that there is someone up the road who is also interested in cardiology is a bit 'so what').

I liked the idea of showing people nearby with shared recreational interests like cycling, because I could imagine if someone contacted me via the site and said 'feel like a bike ride', I'd probably say yes and appreciate the time away from everything else!

I rather liked 'new to the area' too, mainly for those working in rural areas.

I wonder whether there is something we can do to connect students with practices, in other words to help them start forging connections with practices in areas where they think they'll wind up after qualification.

RE: Connections in the profession

I'd like to chat in an environment like this (ie slightly informally and with the possibility of anonymity) with more equine vets. We have the excellent EVG email list which is great for serious clinical questions, but the email format is really hard to follow (especially on a phone) when discussions get longer, and it is not really a place for any less serious matters. More horse vets please!!

RE: Connections in the profession

There is a definite middle ground out there for referral.

I've just been quoted £250 + VAT for a dermatology consultation that includes a skin scrape at a specialist centre.

I know of a good vet with a dermatology cert that will see dogs for £90 with an hour consult, which is more reasonable isn't it?

I've also had an excellent result referring a dog with a grass seed up its nose to a vet who's great and has lots of endoscopes.

Before the referral centres we all knew an excellent vet with an interest working in private practice, maybe we should be looking at that a bit more.
