Now there's an interesting business model - selling a candidate to themself. It's brilliant. I mean, if an agency sent me a candidate that sounded like me, I'd write the cheque without hesitation. What better qualifications could someone have, than to be like me?

I might be a little disappointed to discover later that the candidate was, in fact, me. But hey, that's a detail. I'd have written the cheque by then.

We don't offer recruitment agency services, just an advertising platform!

I heard, and not sure whether it is true or not, that agencies occasionally post fake job adverts in the hope of catching potential candidates for jobs they don't actually have on their books.

Can't happen on VetSurgeon.org of course, because advertisers need to state the location of the practice, and agencies never like doing that for obvious reasons).

Ne'er a day goes by without an agency offering me a vet or nurse when I don't need one. Yet on the very rare occasions I have approached an agency when a regular locum can't help me -they don't have anyone available and/or the once or twice I've found someone via them they are unreliable or unsuitable being inexperienced, possessing poor English language skills or totally useless. Arlo excepted of course (albeit I've not use his services so just being polite!), the only agency which came up trumps consistently was Dovetail before the redoubtable Simon Bird retired.

If a prospective employee can't be bothered to do a little leg work themselves then I'm not interested. Likewise, when I've looked for a job in the past - if a practice felt the need to hide behind an agency, again, not interested.

I moved jobs about 18 months ago and was placed by an agency. All signed and sorted, but less than a month in they were emailing me with jobs i might be interested in, even though they knew my agency fee had been paid by the company.

Ive had to block most agencies and their bods from messaging me, adding me, linkd in too.

One agency we were dealing with for a Vet vacancy, emailed me on the work email asking if i was wanting RVN work!

Obvious! [for the agency] You, the employee who gave all your info to an agency 'cos you thought it would help you get a job, now have a job but, by pure chance, they now have just the job for you paying twice your present salary, no weekends, finish at 2 on Fridays.....

And they, not you, will receive your new employer's payment for advertising that they need someone and by chance the agency has you!!!

My old mate Nigel N. used to tell any canvass calls to "go and Fotograph somewhere else", or words to that effect, which has worked for me always.

Indeed. What are the benefits for a potential employee going through an agency? Given the costs of recruiting through agencies, that must figure into the amount left to pay the salary?

I had an recruitment agent call me at work(!) last week, the person calling told the receptionist that it was a personal call when asked what it was about. I suppose it wouldn't be a breach of the GDPR as my name and the practice phone number are on our website.

I get almost daily emails from various agencies, to whom I never gave my personal details nor consent to contact me. I'm looking forward to receiving similar messages when the GDPR comes into force.

I think they are frantic at the moment about both vets and nurses. I seem to be getting several offers a week on LinkedIn even though I only ever used it for our own recruitment efforts.

Nope. Simply didn't pay them. Kept all the ievidence in a file. They can try and sue us. It would not be hard to defend, then I'd have them for costs.

We have to date been reserved and not named them on the off-chance they weren't "at it".

Deliberate or not, I'm calling shenanigans! Not cricket and all that.

Rvn is happy in job so no need for to sue them.

They give agencies like yourselves a bad name. it was not the vet2vet. Agency.

take a trip over to the vetnurse site - we are quite upfront about which agencies we avoid and why and will be quite happy to share
