After 2 years or so we started NOT paying for the first 3 days. This cut down enormously on the odd sick days, some genuine, some less so. After a day off for an injured knee an employee should at least limp a bit the next day. In one case the change to SSP evoked a miraculous recovery of a sore shoulder.

We have never employed veterinary surgeons who would obviously be a lot more expensive . Also we are Lucky with our nurses that they would rather work than sit at home with their IBD and lamenesses.

RE: Sick pay and income protection

I pay employee for first 2 weeks, then SSP- given that the government doesn't refund SSP at all, and that I have to pay a locum to cover , it is pretty much all I can afford as a small business! The other option was critical illness insurance but I never took that out as I decided with my family history and my own good health and fitness meant I was unlikely to suffer anything critical then it was not worth it.

In hindsight of course I've wasted a lot of money on PHI premiums as I never had a day off for illness in my life but its a personal decision like any non-essential insurance policy.

RE: Sick pay and income protection

As a self-employed, recently new grad I had income cover from day 1 of injury and structured to pay until retirement if required.
Hi, to be boringly specific I need mine to cover team-chasing (at the top level) and hunt races (Melton Hunt Ride and similar). Most policies won't cover racing in any shape or form, but we managed to find one that would, mostly due to having a broker who knew and could argue the differences between that and, say, pointing.

I used Miles Seston (an ex-jockey) at Strathon Park Financial, who was excellent. I also found that a lot of policies would cover eg. eventing, but when you read the fine print it was only 'up to BE Novice' or similar, so you really need to check policies for the specifics. This is probably true of most high risk sports!

RE: Sick pay and income protection

[quote user="Martin Atkinson"]On the income protection, there are two basic ways of approaching this: a long term income protection plan which will pay out until projected retirement age if you suffer long term illness/disability which tend to have a delayed starting date, typically 3 months, to keep the premiums under control and those with a fixed term of 12 months which can start a lot sooner as the premium isn't as high, typically one week to a month.
Martin, how much have you paid out in total on these policies?

It's a genuine question as I have always taken the view that they are a waste of money, driven by insurance companies, especially in regards the won't pay for 3 months, not after 12 and there is bound to be all sorts of get outs. As professional folk it's recognised that we take care of ourselves, are less likely to smoke and eat better, so we are in the lower risk category. Added to this most vets will have the ability to start a more sedimentary career if an illness strikes.

Yes get covered for life insurance for your mortgage as your provider will insist and pension contributions will provide an income for your family (I'm worth more dead than alive )

This way one can avoid having to pay malingerers anything other than SSP and have the discretion to give loyal workers as much as one wants. This may be something you would like to discuss with your employer - it may give you some idea how much he/she values you!

If I'm honest, I'm not aware of anyone who doesn't! But, as you say, it is a small business so the choice is down to the employer.

I can't suggest any particular income protection as it has been so long since I got mine... but do make sure you get independent financial advice and that the cover is profession-specific. I also would have thought that cover that kicks in immediately might be difficult/very expensive.. I think 3 months delay is the norm. (The advice was always to have 3 months worth of finances in savings if possible.)

RE: Sick pay and income protection

I don't think I've ever had anything beyond standard sick, but for income protection I can recommend Cirencester Friendly (originally recommended by the Lloyd and Whyte advisor). They've paid out when I needed it, it's veterinary profession specific and can start from day one if needed. They've also allowed me to take a career break without repercussions on my level of cover. As a Friendly society I believe I get some payout at retirement as well.
