I'm aware that this is to change (taken far too long) but what about existing RVNs?

RE: RVN as SQP
Au contraire: SQP only exists in the UK, the rest of EU doesn't recognise the concept.
Not really relevant.

The regulations as far as I know (correct me if I am wrong) say "suitably qualified person" (very open), not "Suitably Qualified Person" (arguably very restrictive).

RE: RVN as SQP

"I just don't believe that when the legislation was framed with "suitably qualified person" that the intention was to create a new profession of "SQP"."

Au contraire: SQP only exists in the UK, the rest of EU doesn't recognise the concept. EU directive (?10 years ago) that all animal medicines were prescription only, resisted by AMTRA and AHDA who have a vested interest in representing the SQPs and in training them. Hence the mess in the UK of POM-V, POM-VPS, POM-NFA, and our nurses not being "suitably qualified", even though they are suitably trained/experienced etc. Vet profession was a bit too nice to the existing SQPs in allowing them to continue so we were not seen as protectionist.......

Of course they are 'suitably qualified' by definition of their qualification, knowledge and experience so they don't need the moniker SQP. Otherwise you could argue that we're not SQPs because we haven't taken the stupid worthless course. I actually had this discussion with the VMD inspector who said pretty much the same but if all else fails they are acting under the guidance of a vet.

Of course a RVN is suitably qualified.

RE: RVN as SQP
there is little to prevent these medicines going back to proper veterinary supervision or over the counter status if considered that low risk.
Yeah but we all know now that Fipronil is lethal to humans in eggs even though its harmless to fleas!

RE: RVN as SQP

I have always been a little confused how anyone with the limited training and knowledge can be considered suitably qualified for much let alone supplying and (in theory at least) supervising and monitoring some pretty important prescription only products!
