However, they both got themselves a no-claims bonus by being named drivers on other cars when they were newly qualified. Cost me more to start with but the overall savings (being as daddy still pays for their premiums anyway!) was greater.

Tee hey, sometimes adding a younger, named, driver to a policy can reduce the premium considerably if the other drivers are geriatric....

When I came off the company car scheme, a letter from the company stating that i had X many years of claim free driving was accepted by the insurer I chose (Churchill at the time) and I got full no claims bonus

some insurers won't do this, so I guess they don't want business off ex company car drivers

Could be £1000 unless there is an existing practice multi-car policy for any car, any driver.

Or even worse, a young person! I have 2yrs no claims, been driving for 7 years, drive a car worth about £1000, third party only policy, no points, never been in a crash/claimed, still costs me £1200 per annum (because I don't pay up front, would be £1100 otherwise). At least it's down from £1600 last year. That'll be thansk to the tracking box mostly. I got a lovely letter saying I was in the top 5% of safe drivers based on my black box tracker, and it still costs an arm and a leg. Being a young male driver is a little annoying. I can't imagine how much it would be for someone with little driving experience, no NCB etc

How much do multi-car practice policies cost, does anyone know?

my beef was with our association promising to get L&W to look into a product that would be useful to us and failing to do so, despite several agreeing that it was a good idea and promising to do so.

I have had this annual battle for years, and also posted about it. in the past I tried with no luck to get the BVA to address what I thought might be a common problem to the point that they so promised me for 2 years that they would work something out with L&W that when they did not, I did not renew my BVA membership, only to find out that I need it in order to renew my Locum insurance!hard to win. aslo I have the problem of non UK license holders, which surely must not be unique.

It is a long time since we had a practice ambulance and in the past I have either allowed them to use my car (if I've not gone away in it) or one of my daughter's cars which were ostensibly pool cars. However, as it is actually very rare that a home visit is requested its not worth the expense of adding a driver to the insurance and some have abused the privilege by going on day trips on their day off incurring speeding/parking fines, so we tend to just use one of the nurse's vehicles (lets fudge over the insurance aspect of this for now)!

Car hire isn't cheap and you need some sort of additional insurance otherwise they hit you for a £600 excess for any perceived damage

plus you can't put animals in hired vehicles. so i doubt they would lease to a vet practice, end of.

Either provide a vehicle - ie buy one - or only take locums with their own vehicles?

Just use NFU for car insurance. They seem to have a common sense attitude to 'working' vehicles!

Always baffles me when people talk about the cost of the car when discussing insurance .... I assume it is a minor consideration in the calculation of the premium... Insurance is mainly about protecting other other driver/3rd party....what you are driving is pretty irrelevant!!!
