Back to the OP. I confess to only having read the transcript of this case fully today. While it is clear that Miss Butler was unfit to work and it is difficult to see what other course of action the VNDC could have taken in the immediate short term other than to suspend her, what is sadly seems lacking is any sympathy or attempt to address the reason why she has this drink problem. I know that she failed to engage with the DC thus limiting their choices and voluntarily said she would retire from veterinary nursing but I fear for her mental state as she clearly has issues which led to her becoming alcoholic in the first place.

Given the horrific statistics on depression and suicide in our profession, what this make me wonder is rather than punishment resulting in the loss of an individuals job and possibly worsening of their mental state, what responsibility should the DC and RCVS have to address this issue and offer help rather than just punishment.

If I do, I inevitably find myself at the front even if I chance upon a club run and decide to be briefly sociable I end up there. Its not just me being a control freak I drift to the front to take my turn and seem to stay there because no-one else wants to take their's!

Oh sure, she'll pay (literally) for it, but we run an emergency only service at weekends for a reason. If we started doing routine work for those that it suited then we'd have to rota in an extra vet on a weekend to ensure there was someone available to cover emergencies. And there are only two of us in the first place....

Tis true, I'm afraid. I tend to lead from the back as that's where all the trouble is.

In a tour this year, I foolishly got near the front and Steve (someone I know) turned to me and asked

'Do you like fish?'

'Yes I replied'

'Well your Plaice is at the front'

It's a different culture up there with your eyeballs popping and your tongue flapping in the wind.

This seems wise. I had my hen do a couple of months ago and had to play in a roller derby bout the next day. That was not wise.

(Actually it just meant that I was very abstemious on the hen!)

Interesting reading this thread. I had my stag do last weekend (23rd-25th June), originally only had the Monday booked off work but had loads of holiday to take so decided to take the whole week off.

In hindsight, it was a glorious decision. Not because I was under the influence, but because I had the most horrendous hangover. Honestly took until about Thursday to feel human again. I don't think I would have coped working on the Tuesday. Pretty sure my insides are now pickled.

The drinking isn't the problem for me. It's the hangovers, I suffer from them terribly!

Worse. I became the first vet in 6 years to get a needle into it. They have now registered with our practice (did I mention they weren't even our clients....!) and booked in to have me go sedate it for the dentist next week. I think I feel a last minute emergency holiday coming on . They weren't joking, it truly is evil.

Well, having had the weekend I've had I can frankly think of no more suitable time to drink than when on call . Yesterday's delights included:

- the world's most emotional pony PTS, which was followed by the client's electric gates failing, trapping me on their yard and unable to make my getaway.

Did I have a glass of wine last night? Too bloody right I did....!

Next time I have a cycle accident, I will go to A&E 2 hours before it happens, and will get back for evening consults before leaving after finishing the morning ones. No bother.

Mad dog's and Englishmen also spring to mind: on the really hot weekend 2 weeks ago I cycled over 200 miles and when I got back Sunday evening I could barely stand up and kept nearly fainting. You'd think I'd learn but I've got two more similar rides organised for later this summer.

I went in to surgery that evening had it plated and was back at work the next morning. Very similar story with the fractured clavicle last autumn. Tough us cyclists - a bit of pain doesn't worry us, that's for wusses.
