I'm not remotely proud of it.

I don't know what you think about the two above statements. Is my comment better than David's? I'm not even sure.

But I think the problem resides here:
It is very clear to me that hostile, snide, belittling, unfriendly or other such posts deter others from participating. That is a dreadful shame. It's also incredibly selfish.
The definition of 'hostile, snide, etc...' is subjective. Maybe David comment was good for.. er... David Mills and perhaps for Michael Woodhouse? Because they both find they would be happy to receive it they deserved it?

There is a reason forums contain a moderator figure, in this case Arlo. The reason is that some authority has to prevail. And I'm sorry if it sounds undemocratic but someone has to decide how high or low the line is, and what to do if the line is crossed.

I partly moderate a forum of 30K+ people. We are about 8 moderators there and we often disagree on what it should be allowed and what not.

My feeling is that Arlo's measuring tape might not be the best but it is pretty accurate. Maybe I'm being subjective too and I say so because I agree with where that line (the one we shouldn't cross) is placed. But never mind what I think of Arlo Guthrie's moderating powers:

Someone has to do that (authoritarian) job and if it that line isn't respected. Then you should pay the consequences. It is that simple.
Goodness me. This really is getting silly now. I'm aware the profession is somewhat skewed to the left, but posts like this have my jaw on the floor. "horrendous"?! I'm giving Tony some help with the multi-quote function (ie replying to multiple posts in one reply), which should reduce turbo posts dramatically.

RE: I'm passionate, you're opinionated, he's rude
Can this not be fixed in the forum software; auto-merging sequential posts by the same author?
You can do this multiple times in the same reply, which should dramatically reduce your post count!)

By way of example, that's what I am doing in this reply ...
It is unfortunate when good topics get spoiled by a poor choice of language. I thought I'd provide an evidenced based post on the "Pre-Anaesthetic" thread and was somewhat surprised at some of the posts.
That's really interesting, thank you, and I am working on various solutions to the problem of bringing relevant information to the surface.

I know - a bugbear of mine for a while. I am working on a solution (expecting quote from developers very shortly). I know, I said I'd do it a lot earlier - it has been delayed by a) further improvements to VetSurgeon Jobs which took much longer than expected (which is what pays for all this!), other things in the development pot, including Vet Confessionals, Debate of the Month, Positive Thinking (a little project I have been working on in the background), not to mention a child in and out of hospital like a yo yo.

Bear with me ... I'm getting there!

I think you're losing sight of the fact that this is a forum for discussion not a scientific debate, it is inevitable that threads get sidetracked. Think more about an argument between friends in a pub, a bit of 'flowery' language enhances it. While it is true there are a few members who are too dogmatic and turbo post the same mantra, it would be very boring if it was all fact and no opinion.

If I said [as my boss did that "chloroform suited him when he castrated horses" one star would follow so nobody would know whether it was chloroform or the poster or the opinion that got the one star.

You've gotta admit the response adds nothing to anything in this thread so far!

Actually, this is true of any insult or rudeness!

eg If I'd said "You *ickhead, this adds nothing to the thread" my insult would add nothing relevant to the thread.

Almost always insults reveal a paucity of rebuttal, or a personal attack or opinion, not relating to the post.

The difficulty for me always arises when a post condemns an approach to a clinical situation which I believe, based solely on my experience to be wrong but is then rubbished without any sensible rebuttal.

Gee, look at the trouble I was in when I showed that some drug had actually been tested on normal animals to prove that trial dosage was possible er, and harmless!

RE: I'm passionate, you're opinionated, he's rude
Arlo does a great job in reining in some diverse and strong opinions, but I have one (rhetorical) question for those inclined to intemperate language - Does it enhance your argument or the strength of your opinion?
