Perhaps I just don't prescribe it as much but Ovarid has been discontinued by Virbac. Spoke to Virbac who told me its not coming back. At least not by them but no mention of any alternatives.

While this could easily be condemned as above, looking at the evidence of the many cats on high Ovarid for long periods with no flea allergy and therefore no irritation there is some humane merit in the extreme medication. Iatrogenic diabetes wasn't inevitable and owners are far more receptive to flea control when the animal is comfortable.

Back in the days of ineffective pyrethrums and, usually, equally ineffective owners, adequate flea control was almost impossible so Ovarid could be considered humane as compared to severe FAD.

Fortunately modern insecticides with dogmatic repeated advice are so much better these days.

RE: Ovarid discontinued
ovarid was cheaper than flea control, particularly where 10 cats in house with only one suffering from flea-allergy dermatitis.

dex can be used similarly if that is what is being looked for.

cats with a bad flea allergy where fleas are not being controlled need more than one pred every 5 days. Might get away with one dex every 3-7 days though.

Steroids are cheaper than flea-control in many situations and have a huge safety margin in cats with very few adverse effects.
I really do not believe I'm reading this. Even the worst dinovet would not condone this as a recommended protocol. Worst case scenario to get a neglected FAD situation under control maybe but to use it as the method of control is totally unethical. I am totally gobsmacked.

I was tempted to post a 'very angry' emoji but that may give the impression I'm saying this lightheartedly but quite honestly if you think this is good practice you are not fit to practise.
Depomedrone inj's

Orally: dexamethasone maybe lasts bit longer than pred so twice weekly dosing more likely to be successful for cats otherwise needing daily pred - 0.5mg tablet twice weekly or 0.1-0.2ml of 4mg/ml oral solution twice weekly.

Flea treatment
Sorry for turbo posting but this is why steroids get a bad name!

Depomed lasts far too long for simple flea allergy with concurrent flea control and a course of pred, usually at inadequate doses, is unnecessary.

Once again a single highish dose of pred or any other short-acting steroid will give 5 days control in a managed case ie with good flea treatment given religiously regularly.

Of course depomed is the treatment of choice in a large pyotraumatic area ["moist eczema"]

Repeat, as and only, when necessary, as decent flea control works well very quickly.

This post should get 5 diamond stars as it is all you need to know about flea control and associated skin reaction.

But it'll get just one or none!!

RE: Ovarid discontinued
Flea treatment
Well hallelujah, we've hit the nail on the head but perhaps add the word 'effective'!
