Mariette, if you took out UK Citizenship no one would tell on you - the UK allows dual nationality and would not inform the Dutch government

you would also be entitled to have a permanent residency stamp in your Dutch passport, so they would never know.

There isn't much Nazi in the UK establishment, even a Tory one.

Me, I'm voting Lib Dem. For all the good that will do.
Sorry not this easy. On renewal of my Dutch passport I need to declare that I have not changed nationality. For my Dutch state pension I have to declare every year that I am still a Dutch national and have not changed nationality. Signing untrue statements in the age of internet and google is not a wise thing to do...

Mariette
Totally agree mariette asselbergs I've been living in Vienna for years, married to an Austrian, and would take Austrian citizenship in an instant BUT dual citizenship is illegal here and it is not some sort of jokey bureaucracy you can just lie your way around......as so often assumed by other Brits! It really gets on my nerves that the standard answer to Brexit and the havoc it is playing with OUR lives (EU in UK and UK in EU) is that we should have applied for citizenship by now and if we haven't then it's our fault. Lots of countries don't allow dual citizenship! And I could apply for Austrian citizenship but I would only be granted "provisional" citizenship for the first 2 years until I brought them PROOF from the British authorities that I had given up my British citizenship!! It is not as easy as you think and with elderly parents in the UK (including my dad currently undergoing chemotherapy) I would like to still be able to live and work in my home country if necessary.

The only exceptions to the Austrian rules are if you have parents of different nationalities (i.e. my children are allowed to be British & Austrian citizens) or if you are "essential to the Republic of Austria" (i.e. a skier or opera singer!)

RE: Immigrant vets
I think there is a balance to be had between a determination to get the best deal and antagonising the other side to the point where they just dig their heals in and say no.
The last think this country owns of any value is it's housing stock, but that's being raided by children to pay for their inflated houses and now the government to pay for social care.

The ONLY solution is to raise taxation to everyone. The Lib Dems will add 1% for the NHS, labour won't do it, the Conservatives will (it's coded in a totally non commit ant manifesto) In this at least I applaud the Tories that some realism is creeping in.

It amazes me, truly, that a set of professionals who are on a daily basis pragmatic, intelligent, reflective people, can remain so ludicrously wedded to partisan beliefs.

The Labour party is a complete shambles. I can't think of one member of the shadow cabinet that I would want anywhere near running a governmental department. It is packed full of bien pensant left metropolitan elite, who are so ridiculously out of touch with the "working class" to make them irrelevant. At least they appear to acknowledge they will be trounced - their manifesto is pie-in-the-sky giveaways that would bankrupt the country.

It does make me chuckle when people say the Tories "savaged communities" and people will never forgive them, as if a party cannot change its views with the times and is forever wedded to Thatcherism (whilst those haters conveniently ignore that the foundations built then continue to serve us today). The Conservatives are heading towards a restriction of globalist free-trade capitalism, as by common consensus it is by now somewhat out of control, whilst eschewing the protectionist state-led claptrap of Corbyn's mob. Lest we forget Labout were in power for a great many years in the early 21st century and the gap between earnings increased under them - the Conservatives have reversed this trend in the last 2 parliaments.

This isn't just about Brexit, but who you want running the country. I agree there is a dearth of options, but to say the Conservatives aren't the best placed, most competent, and skilled party is a triumph of whimsy over reality.
So you attack members who disagree with you by insulting their intelligence and are only able to provide adjectives of the like of 'shambles' and 'mob' to back up your argument.

Who's really 'ludicrously wedded to partisan beliefs' then? At least a member admitted voting Tory before, have you ever considered or have voted Labour?

RE: Immigrant vets

RE: Immigrant vets

He won by allowing large numbers of people to join the Labour Party for a few quid. Mobilising enough people to overwhelm long-standing party members. Clever? Yes, but even 100% of a small minority can outnumber a small percentage of usual voters. His cronies are very good at mobilising supporters whereas the majority stand by (similar to RCVS elections!).

Does it mean he will be appreciated and trusted by the average voter? Not likely IMO!

RE: Immigrant vets
Corbin is unelectable as the chair of the village hall committee, never mind as the leader of a country.
I'm not a huge fan of Jeremy Corbyn, but I do find comments like this very odd, whatever you think of the job he is doing or how well he would do as prime minister he does have a proven track record in winning elections having twice won the election to be the leader of the labour party, which is a slightly more substantial organisation than a village hall committee.

RE: Immigrant vets

Sadly there is little or nothing that would enable me to have confidence in Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbott however juicy the give away appears!

RE: Immigrant vets
No one else can possibly win the election so it WILL be the Tories taking the UK out of Europe.
Not sure that us having a 'strong negotiating position' over leaving the EU is a)possible or b)likely to be significantly influenced by us going in with an elected PM. If I disagree with most of the fundamental values of a party, and many of their policies or manifesto proposals, I certainly wouldn't consider voting for them just based on a very theoretical improvement in our negotiation position to leave the EU.

RE: Immigrant vets

Ms May is exactly the person to negotiate Brexit. I don't buy the whole Tories are the best party for Brexit either. So many factors are involved that very quickly they become meaningless.

Dianne Abbott is so good at figures that I quite believe corporation tax can be spent so many times over without harming industry!

I always felt it was foolish to say tax rates will not go up over the next parliament. It reduces flexibility of spending even if essential

Corbyn's Labour is so full of promises that it should appeal to every voter, until you work out how much it is going to cost.

Big businesses faced with a hefty corporation tax bill will just find ways to avoid it. New businesses will not come to the UK in the first place!
