Why do you have a test chip attached to the scanner? Surely this was an event waiting to happen?

The test chip is to check the scanner is working correctly when failing to find a chip in an animal; further training on correct use of the scanner will be circulated :)

RE: Failed microchip - who is responsible
We have a 'two people' scan rule , when a chip can't be found on a stray, as there have been odd cases where a second scan has found it for no apparent reason.

We have a cheap 'Halo' reader (as well as good ones). It picks up chips at 100 yards (non-EU!) but not one when it is inside the implant needle! I have a pretty expensive scanner for my horse work which regularly finds chips (in small animals and equines) which have been declared not present or not working after having been scanned with a cheaper version. I also always carry a spare set of batteries and change them if I can't find a chip that is expected to be there. The vast majority of times this does the trick - there is no warning that the battery is low until it is virtually dead, yet the scanner stops picking all chips up long before that point.

It worries me that if my dog went missing and was found that it might be in a situation where someone declared it 'unchipped' because of any of the above scenarios.

RE: Failed microchip - who is responsible

We use Identichips and I have no idea whether we put the first one in or not.

RE: Failed microchip - who is responsible
I think they've sorted it now tho but would like to know if there are continuing issues
